Eternals Director Takes Responsibility For Batman and Superman References In Film

One big Eternals mystery has been solved.

The MCU just had a record-breaking year, with 10 projects released in the cinematic universe in 2021. WandaVisionLoki, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsHawkeye, and Spider-Man: No Way Home were the overall favorites. The overall not-favorites? The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Black WidowWhat If…?Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and Eternals,.

It’s a mixed bag of films and TV series, and some of them fans HATED, some of them fans LOVED, and some of them were just meh. That hasn’t stopped fans from ranking these projects though, and Eternals is unfortunately at the bottom for most.

Eternals is the lowest-rated MCU film on Rotten Tomatoes. And it’s a HOT topic. Some love the film to death, and some hate the film to the point where they send death threats to people on Twitter who support it. However, there is one thing that the MCU fandom has all taken a stand against: the DC references in the film. The reasons for the hate vary, but it’s the one thing in common that all fans share. However, that hasn’t stopped the cast and crew from publicly defending the choice to include the references.

Director Chloe Zhao herself has spoken up, and here’s what she had to say.

Chloe Zhao Takes Responsibility For DC References In Eternals

In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, Eternals director Chloe Zhao spoke about the DC references in the film, and why she placed them where they are located in the film. She also gives a hint towards a deleted scene. Read the full quote below:

I take responsibility for that. I just believe we all should live in one big happy family. And also, you know, we can talk about the elephant in the room – which is that Ikaris [Madden] reminds people of Superman. There are many brilliant filmmakers who’ve brought Superman to the screen in their own modern interpretation of this beloved mythology that exists in many cultures. So I just felt it’s great to pay tribute, it’s great to acknowledge these iconic interpretations of Superman. In Eternals, Gilgamesh [Lee], watches his movies while he’s looking after Thena [Jolie]. You will see that there’s going to be a deleted scene where he talks about another film that’s gonna make you smile. And he loves Batman movies.

Chloe Zhao when asked about the DC references in Eternals

When Eternals released, the film received a ton of negative criticism for its use of DC references in the film. Some even went as far to say that there were more DC references than Marvel ones. However, now that the film has released, the cast and crew have an opportunity to explain their creative choices. Director Zhao took this opportunity to do just that, and now that she’s explained it, the reasoning for including the references actually makes sense. The DC Cinematic Universe exists in the MCU.
