A new poster for Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022) and the return of legacy cast member John Larroquette have been announced.

The upcoming horror film is slated for a Netflix streaming release on February 18th, 2022. This is the ninth film in the franchise, but it operates as a direct sequel to the original film, ignoring all other installments in the franchise. In this universe, Leatherface hasn’t been seen or heard from since the tragic, bloody events of the first film.

John Larroquette’s first film credit was for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), where he provided the opening narration. Larroquette returned for the 2003 film and the prequel, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. Larroquette’s narration is to the franchise what the opening crawl is to Star Wars, so his return is sure to build excitement for Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022), which had been sorely lacking in promotion prior to this week.

Shortly after his return was announced in an exclusive report from Variety, Netflix released the first official trailer for the 2022 film. The poster features an older Leatherface, wearing his mask of human flesh, standing in a sunflower patch. The poster is one of the best to come out of the new golden age of slasher films, with its eerie, unsettling composition.

In the same announcement, Netflix confirmed that the official trailer will release on January 31, 2022.

“It felt important to honor the original ‘TCM’ at every opportunity…John’s voice is iconic in the original opening and we thought it would help set the perfect tone in our own intro. It’s also a subtle way of letting the fans know they’re in good hands…I can’t wait for fans to analyze and find all of the callbacks, some of which aren’t even intentional. I swear some stuff just happened and it’s kind of freaky…I will say that we shot with one of the original, working Poulan chainsaws from the original film. On set, every morning I would walk by the prop cart, touch it and get its blessing for the day. I wanted some of its ’70s magic.

-David Blue Garcia

Garcia clearly has an immense respect and love for the original work, something will hopefully carry over into the upcoming sequel. His decision to use an original prop and Larroquette’s voice for narration speaks volumes to the dedication of the creative team when it comes to creating a faithful sequel that honors what came before.

TRAILER TO BE UNLEASHED JANUARY 31

Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel wrote the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Hooper also directed the picture. The classic horror film has become one of the most iconic movies within the genre. As one of the most enduring and beloved slasher franchises, the story has undergone reboot after reboot. In fact, there are six different timelines/continuities within the franchise, including the new one introduced in Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022).

Most of the franchise installments follow the same pattern as the upcoming picture, working as sequels to the original film, while ignoring all other entries. This applies to Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation and Texas Chainsaw 3D. Leatherface (2017) serves as a prequel to the original film and Texas Chainsaw 3D.

The only films to stand completely independent of the original film are The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) and it’s prequel, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. Those two projects are true reboots, setting them apart from the many “requels” of slasher franchise.

2022 FEATURES THE RETURN OF JOHN LARROQUETTE

Texas Chainsaw Massacre is directed by David Blue Garcia, written by Chris Thomas Devlin, with story by Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues. The horror requel stars John Larroquette, Sarah Yarkin, Elsie Fisher, Jacob Latimore, Moe Dunford, Olwen Fouere, and Jessica Allain. Texas Chainsaw Massacre arrives exclusively on Netflix on February 18, 2022.
