Marvel’s upcoming Disney Plus series Secret Invasion is about to change the MCU as we know it.

As the MCU continues to expand and explore a library of characters both familiar and new, we have yet to discover the history of their most mysterious man, Nick Fury. That’s going to change in the near future as we’re about to unravel some of the secrets of the spy whose secrets have secrets.

Moon Knight’s over and now we’re patiently waiting for Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk to release on Disney Plus. With so much hype surrounding those Marvel contenders, it can be easy to forget about another potential hit, Secret Invasion.

Samuel L. Jackson Gives Some Nick Fury Hints

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Samuel L. Jackson talked about learning new things about Fury, and his excitement to explore “something other than the badassery”.

“There are things that even I really didn’t know about Nick Fury that I just found out, that the minds behind what happened during the Blip are fantastic. That’s part of what we’re uncovering when we do this series now. The place that Nick Fury is in, the evolution of his story, or the devolution of his story, as maybe we wind it down or maybe we crank it up. It’s kind of hard to tell. But, giving me an opportunity to explore something other than the badass-ery of who Nick Fury is. I’ve had a good time doing that, and I’m looking forward to people sharing that aspect of who he is when this series does happen.”

Is Secret Invasion A Crossover Or NOT?

Jackson seemed quite convincing in what he had to say. It sounds like it’ll be an interesting take on the popular comic book series. Secret Invasion was a major ensemble piece of superheroes in the comics, however, it’s currently unclear if the series will go that route or keep the focus on the dynamic duo that is Fury and Talos. Based on Kevin Feige’s comments, it doesn’t sound like the series will be a major ensemble, but it was confirmed that James Rhodes will be showing up. Maybe there are a few Avengers in the mix, let’s see, I highly doubt it though.

“Well, there were more characters in the Secret Invasion comic series than there were in Endgame so, no. It’s not that but it very much is a showcase for Sam Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn and tapping into the paranoia elements of the Secret Invasion comic series that was great with the twists and turns that that took. So, that’s certainly our focus more than, ‘Can we cram in more characters than Endgame?’”

Also, back in 2021, Feige described the show as a political thriller where he had this to say:

“I mean, we’re interested in the political paranoia aspect of Secret Invasion and really showcasing the stars with Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn, two amazing actors that you want to have in any series, and we’re very lucky to have them for that. That’s the sort of primary focus of that and, of course, it will tie into other things and the Skrulls in ways you haven’t seen before, but yes, anything could be anything. Wise words. But we wanted to do that as a series because it would allow us to do something different than we’ve done before.”

Secret Invasion will take us along for a ride with Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos as they race to combat a fraction of Skrulls hellbent on invading Earth.

I don’t know about you but I too am excited to see “something other than badassery.” If the series diverts from the comics’ ensemble nature I think we all can live. Besides, I don’t believe it’s wise to have so many crossovers or even cameos so soon, they can create a problem of over-saturation and take away from the plot. For any film, the top priority should always be to tell a great immersive story for audiences.
