The highly anticipated prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road, titled Furiosa, has gotten an exciting new synopsis.

Back in 2015, when Mad Max: Fury Road has roared its way into theatres, action cinema was forever changed and people were craving for more .After 7 years, a prequel about the fan-favorite character Furiosa, first portrayed by Charlize Theron, is currently shooting in Australia.

The film now has gotten a first synopsis, revealing a handful of plot information.

FURIOSA MEANS BUSINESS

The synopsis is courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures and was released via SFFGazette.com:

“As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.”

The synopsis confirms that we will get to see the, in Fury Road teased origin of Furiosa, as fans of the film will remember, Furiosa told Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) snippets of her life, which fits in the prequel’s first description. Maybe we will even get to see places like the often mentioned Green Place.

The prequel only titled Furiosa is currently shooting in Australia, with the first set photos already showing a bunch of motorcycles and cars, as well as a man with long red hair and a long red beard, speculated to be one of the film’s stars: Chris Hemsworth (or at least a stand-in).

Thor himself was long rumored to be playing a younger version of the villainous Immortan Joe, who was played by Hugh Keays-Byrne in Fury Road. Hemsworth also shared the film’s clapboard via Social Media to celebrate the first day of production.

Tom Burke took over a role previously supposed to be played by Aquaman and Watchmen star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who had to drop out of the project due to scheduling conflicts. Through the film’s synopsis, we could speculate that Burke is playing another villain of the film: the Warlord Dementus. Tom Burke is best known for his performances as Orson Welles in David Fincher’s Mank.

Emmy nominee and Golden Globe Winner Anya Taylor-Joy will step in the shoes of Charlize Theron as she will be playing the young Furiosa. While Director George Miller thought about de-aging Theron he decided against the idea and cast a younger actress. Taylor-Joy is best known for her leading role in The Queen’s Gambit and her collaborations with director Robert Eggers. The latest is the Viking epic The Northman.

The film is co-written and directed by George Miller, who also helmed Fury Road as well as the original Mad Max trilogy starring Mel Gibson.

Mad Max: Fury Road was a huge critical success, still holding a 90 Metascore and a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film sadly only did okay at the box office with a global rollout of almost $400 Million. But it also garnered an incredible 10 Oscar nominations and won 6 of them.

I can’t wait for Furiosa. The film’s cast is great, even though I am still a bit sad that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II had to drop out of the project. George Miller will for sure deliver another action classic, probably with a bigger focus on the story. It will be great to return to this world and I’m very much looking forward to more set photos and more information about the project. Sadly, we still have to wait almost two years.

Furiosa is set to race into theatres on May 22, 2024.
