The rumors about Steven Yeun’s Thunderbolts casting are true.

It was announced a few days ago that Steven Yeun, famed star of The Walking Dead, Voltron: Legendary Defender, and Invincible to name a few, will be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming Thunderbolts movie in a key role. The film is stacked with characters from all over the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Harrison Ford, Sebastian Stan, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Wyatt Russell, Ayo Edebiri, Olga Kurylenko, and Hannah John-Kamen already cast. But Ford is set to play President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, and the rest of the cast is set to be part of Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) team.

So who is Steven Yeun playing?

The rumor about the Thunderbolts story is that Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s team will be facing a “Superman-level” threat. A threat, despite being the founder of the Thunderbolts, she will have a part in creating. She’s essentially creating this team to cover up or fix her mistake. That mistake was the creation of Marvel’s Golden Man, a near unstoppable force, The Sentry. The Sentry, according to our sources, will be portrayed by the incredible Steven Yeun.

Who is The Sentry?

The Sentry vs. The Void

Marvel’s The Sentry is one of the most powerful heroes in the world. In the comic books, he is empowered by the enigmatic Professor’s secret formula that came about trying to replicate USA’s Super Soldier Serum and influence from Canada’s Weapon X Program. Robert Reynolds, a high school freshman suffering from schizophrenia and anxiety, unknowingly steals the serum hoping it would lead to an intense high. After ingesting it, he gains the powers of a million exploding suns and begins a life of superherodom and his lifelong battle with his arch-enemy, The Void.

It is later discovered that Robert’s schizophrenia was empowered by the serum, which did give him the powers and enables him to become The Sentry. But it also empowered his dark half and creating his antithesis, The Void. This malevolent persona dedicates his life to killing as many people as The Sentry saves. The Sentry goes to great lengths to defeat The Void, going as far as to alter his and the world’s memories so that The Sentry and The Void cease to exist. That is until he is made to remember in the pages of Marvel Comics New Avengers (2005).

It is very unlikely the MCU will adhere strictly to The Sentry’s comic book origin and story in Thunderbolts. However, the shining light and inescapable darkness are likely going to be key factors of the character. Especially if The Sentry and The Void remain in a single form, like the form of Steven Yeun, it makes for a truly epic threat that only a team of highly capable, and morally ambiguous, people might have to handle.

Things will be made absolutely certain when Thunderbolts releases on July 26, 2024.
