WWE reveals a new mid-card championship for the women’s division, known as the WWE Women’s United States Championship.
On Friday night’s episode of SmackDown, SmackDown GM Nick Aldis announced the championship via a pre-recorded video. Aldis hailed the women, especially on the SmackDown brand.
“The women of WWE have broken every glass ceiling, overcome every obstacle, and proven themselves to be the definition of talent, resilience, athleticism, and yes, even ruthlessness. But above all, they’ve redefined success for women in professional wrestling. Here on SmackDown, we have a roster of world class athletes who push themselves to the limit night after night to do one thing, leave a legacy. And now it’s time to reveal something that represents exactly that. A new symbol of excellence at WWE. The WWE Women’s United States Championship.”
The WWE’s New Era Of Champions
Nick Aldis goes on to explain that the championship will not be awarded or given to its inaugural champion. It will be earned by whomever is willing and capable of seizing the opportunity.
As of right now we don’t really know anything about the championship. We don’t know how its first champion will be determined. It may be via a single match for example a Battle Royale, Fatal 4-Way, Ladder match. It is also possible and more likely as this is usually how new championships are awarded, via a tournament.

We also don’t know if it will be a cross-brand championship or exclusive to SmackDown. Also if it is a SmackDown exclusive championship will RAW have their own mid-card championship?
Showing how ahead of the curve she is RAW Superstar and current MITB holder Tiffany Stratton supports the idea for a new mid-card RAW women’s championship on a recent episode of Gorilla Position prior to the Women’s US Championship reveal. Her idea is a perfect branding for WWE’s new streaming rights deal with Netflix starting in January.

“I think it would be a great idea, because I know NXT has one [the NXT Women’s North American Championship], actually. And they have so many women down in NXT and we have so many women on the main roster right now. So I think it would be a great idea to introduce a mid-card title. And a Netflix Championship? I think that would be amazing. What a great idea.”

WWE having a title named after the network or in this case the streaming service the show is streamed on reminds me of AEW’s TNT and TBS Championships. Maybe WWE can add even more prestige onto a Netflix Championship than AEW’s prestigious TNT Championship.
The Women’s Championship Is Long Overdue
The idea of the women’s mid-card championship is nothing new. It has been talked about for years and years. At one point then 24/7 Champion Dana Brooke now known as Ash By Elegance in TNA talked about converting the 24/7 Championship into a women’s mid-card championship.
This is something which is long overdue for the women’s division. They introduced the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships years ago, but until now never had a women’s mid-card championship. I argue that they should have done a mid-card championship before the tag championships especially since WWE has struggled with making the men’s and women’s tag team division interesting.
WWE is about to get pretty exciting with this new championship. What do you think of the name being the Women’s United States Championship? Would you rather it not be the women’s equivalent of the United States’ championship? What name would you have preferred? Do you think it will be cross-brand or a SmackDown exclusive? Do you like the idea of RAW’s women’s mid-card championship being called the Netflix Championship? Most importantly let us know on social media who do you think should be the inaugural WWE Women’s United States Champion.
