KAKEGURUI Is Coming to Netflix with a New Live-Action Series Adaption BET

Kakegurui is receiving an English-language, live-action adaptation from Netflix in the form of the new upcoming series, BET. Get excited Kakegurui fans as our favorite gambling, high stakes, thriller animation/manga is now being adapted into a brand-new live-action TV series called BET.

Netflix announced on its Canadian X account that the new live-action series is already under production in Toronto, with the announcement the main cast for the series was also released. You can see the announcement below:

NETFLIX ANNOUNCES KAKEGURUI LIVE-ACTION ADAPTATION BET

Netflix announced the following actors for the main cast:

  • Miku Martineau (Played Ani in Kate
  • Ayo Solanke (Played Stacy Littleton in Almost Unsolved
  • Eve Edwards (Played Gwendolyn in The Good Doctor
  • Clara Alexandrova (Played Morgan in A Million Little Things
  • Hunter Cardinal (Played Daniel in A Raven’s Song
  • Anwen O’Driscoll (Played Cathy MacDonald in October Faction
  • Aviva Mongillo (Played Juniper in Workin’ Moms
  • Ryan Sutherland (YouTube Creator) 

Not many details on the TV series adaption have been released yet, however, it is speculated that actress Miku Martineau will play the lead role of Yumeko and fellow co-star Ayo Solanke, will play the role of Ryota. After news broke out, actress Miku Martineau went to Instagram to share the exciting news with her fandom by sharing a news article produced by The Hollywood Reporter covering the announcement of the new TV show BET.

Along with the news that we do know, Simon Barry will be developing, writing, and directing BET. Simon is well-known for creating some popular shows you may have heard of such as; Continuum, Bad Blood, Van Helsing, Warrior Nun and many more. While working on BET, Simon will also be working on another upcoming thriller TV series called Lakrima

Kakegurui was first known as a manga story Kakegurui: Compulsive Gambler written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Toru Naomura. Their manga story was first published back in March 2014, coming out in Square Enix’s Gangan Joker Anthology Magazine, from there the story was then collected into seventeen tankobon volumes, releasing the first on Oct 22, 2014, and the last on May 22, 2013.  

Two light novels were then released the first being Kakegurui-Trip by Hikaru Muno (Kawamoto’s younger brother) and illustrated by Toru Naomura, published on Aug 22, 2017, and the second light novel; Kakegurui-Joker also written by Muno and illustrated by Naomura, published on Mar 22, 2019. Both light novels were published by Square Enix.

The manga story Kakegurui- Compulsive Gambler was also licensed by Yen Press, at Anime Expo 2015 Yen Press released a statement that they had been licensed to release an English copy of the manga for the release in North America. The manga series became popular amongst the fandom and in 2017 was given the chance to be made into its very own anime series, airing on MBS and Tokyo MX. 

In 2018, the anime series was then broadcast outside of Japan worldwide by Netflix, the series consists of two seasons both having 12 episodes each. Directed by Yuichiro Hayashi who is also known for directing such anime titles as; Attack on the Titan, Garo: Divine Flame, Dorohedoro, and more. The script writer for Kakegurui anime was Yasuko Kobayashi who has worked on other projects like; Galaxy Angel, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Death Note, and many more.

As well as achieving an anime series the manga Kakegurui: Compulsive Gambler was also turned into a Japanese live-action, drama series. The TV adaption was first announced on Nov 21, 2017, and was first broadcast on MBS, on Jan 14, 2018. The show was then released by Netflix in the United States and the United Kingdom back in May 2018, with English, Spanish, Chinese, and Thai subtitles.  

The Japanese TV drama adaption was directed by Tsutomu Hanabusa, Hanabusa has directed other manga TV live-action adaptions that you may have seen before like; Tokyo Revengers, Real Girl, and more. The Kakegurui TV series expanded and made two live-action movies Kakegurui: The Movie and Kakegurui Part 2: Desperate Russian Roulette. Both were also directed by Hanabusa.

The Netflix live-action adaption of Kakegurui, BET, will be the first English-made series based on the manga. Netflix Canada posted the following description with their announcement, “A boarding school for the global elite where underground gambling determines the social hierarchy is upended by the arrival of a mysterious transfer student. Starring Miku Martineau, Ayo Solanke, Eve Edwards, Clara Alexandrova, Hunter Cardinal, Anwen O’Driscoll, Aviva Mongillo, Ryan Sutherland.”

The show does not yet have an official release date. It will debut exclusively on Netflix at a later date:
