The Witches Trailer Casts An Exuberant Spell

The Witches

Warner Brothers has released their trailer for a reboot of The Witches and it looks pretty spell-binding. The film is based on the beloved children’s book by Roald Dahl about a boy and his grandmother’s fight against witches, originally adapted in 1990.

This trailer presents us with what looks to be a modern-day re-imagining of the material headlined by longtime director Robert Zemeckis (who co-wrote the script with Guillermo Del Toro and Black-ish creator Kenya Barris).

The Witches Official Trailer

The most eye-catching elements of the trailer are the newly diverse cast, Anne Hathaway as the villainous Grand High Witch and the Everybody Hates Chris-style narration by Chris Rock (presumably playing an older version of the child protagonist).  The computer-generated imagery looks mid-tier and the flippant tone differentiates it from the 1990 version, but it overall looks promising.

The Witches Mice Mouses

The Witches stars Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer, Stanley Tucci, and is narrated by Chris Rock.  It was originally scheduled for theatrical release, but will now land its magic broom on HBO Max October 22nd, 2020.
