Netflix releases the gorgeous Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Rise of the TMNT): The Movie trailer.
The fifth television series of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is getting a movie! Rise of the TMNT is a wildly underappreciated iteration of our favorite pubescent terrapins, and sadly this is likely to be the finale of the hotly contested series. But it looks like the series is going out with a bang! After nearly two years since airing the final episode of Season 2, Rise of the TMNT is debuting their movie on August 5, 2022, exclusively on Netflix. To increase the hype, Netflix has released a new trailer of the movie featuring a familiar brainy-looking race of beings deeply tied into the lore of the turtles.

One thing fans of the franchise will immediately take note of is the introduction of Casey Jones. What is confusing, is that there was another Casey Jones featured in Season 2, Cassandra Jones, who joined the Hamato Clan after realizing the error of the ways of the Foot Clan. She makes no appearance in the trailer, leaving me to question if this is a retcon due to the backlash entitled fans spewed, or is she an ancestor of this other Casey Jones as Rise of the TMNT has always been an origin story that kind of builds up the Turtles from young immature teenagers to the discovering who they are and save the world type teenagers we are accustom to.
While some were not fans of the unique design and interpretation of this iteration, what cannot be disputed is the incredible quality of animation. The final fight in the Season Finale rivaled that of the best-animated features. Now the movie seems to be taking that to an entirely new level. The fluidity, the choreography, and the colors, it is absolutely gorgeous. Fans of the design or not, the level up in art and animation is still noteworthy. Take a look at some stills from the movie Netflix released below.

Love it or hate it, I am thoroughly hyped for this movie. I am curious about Cassandra/Casey Jones and how she connects to this Casey Jones from the future, I can’t wait to see this interpretation of the krangs, and I am hopeful that people give this truly underrated version of the turtles a chance. It is more juvenile than the 2003 and 2012 versions, but it does ramp up. The first season is definitely not a linear narrative, but the development and payoff are there. Just imagine watching the TMNT as Looney Tunes that stealthily turns into Avatar: The Last Airbender. I mean Eric Bauza is splinter, he’s like 75% of the current Looney Tunes already.
