As he searches for his purpose, he finds himself in possession of the Scarab, an ancient relic of alien biotechnology. When the Scarab chooses Reyes as its host, he is given a powerful suit that gives him extraordinary powers, changing his destiny forever and becoming the Superhero, Blue Beetle.
GARRETT AND KORD AS THE BLUE BEETLE
In the comics, there are three people who have used the name Blue Beetle since the character’s introduction to the comics in 1939 by Charles Nicholas Wojtkoski. The original character who hailed the title was Dan Garrett, who was an adventurous hero who gained his powers from ‘Sacred Scarab.’ He gained increased speed, strength, and toughness with the ability to fly and shoot energy blasts.
The character was introduced at the World’s Fair Expo in New York City in 1939, the day which Fox Publications paid to have named “Blue Beetle Day.” His popularity was immediate but over time, his popularity faltered. The character was eventually bought by Charlton Comics in the late 60’s when the hero had entered the boom of the Silver Age of comics.
This is where the new character, Ted Kord, was introduced. He was a student of Dan Garrett who was a genius in mechanics. He was given the Scarab after Garrett passed away but he became a different version. This led him to use gadgets to fight crime. Kord became part of the Justice League and was killed in action by Maxwell Lord.
The Scarab was left on the Rock of Eternity and when it was destroyed, the Scarab made its way to El Paso, Texas, where Jaime Reyes is originally from.
ENTER JAIME REYES, THE BLUE BEETLE
Jaime Reyes was first introduced in 2003’s Infinite Crisis #6 by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner. Reyes is the blue beetle of the DC Universe. Reyes was able to unlock the secrets of the Scarab like no one before him. While Dan Garrett granted him powers, Reyes got the full living suit of biomechanical armor that is fused with Jaime’s spine. It’s a frightening situation for the young hero but he was able to develop some amazing abilities like flight, energy manipulation, and changing the weaponry of the Scarab’s form.
He makes multiple friends along the way, like Booster Gold who becomes a mentor. They both eventually team up and go back in time to save Ted Kord’s life. When it comes to the Scarab, it has two separate origins. In the original version of Jaime’s story, it becomes a weapon that was created by an alien species known as the Reach. It is ultimately not meant to be for human use but strangely enough, it became bonded with Jaime.
As of the current story right now, Jaime told one of the founding members of The Justice Society, Doctor Fate, that the Scarab is made from magic. It now seems like the Scarab is both magical and an alien artifact.
As stated above, Blue Beetle will be available for purchase digitally and physically on October 31. Now, when it comes to when it will be available on Max, there’s a possibility that it will be available around the first week of November if it follows a similar release strategy as The Flash. Still, you can check out the first 10-minute preview above.
