South Park Studios announced a new event for Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s Emmy-winning animated adult comedy, South Park: Joining the Panderverse! A new trailer was released for the upcoming event, which you can view below.
South Park follows four boys – Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, Kenny McCormick, and Eric Cartman – who live in the titular Colorado mountain town. With all the outlandish occurrences in the world, the show delivers social commentary with surreal humor and brutal honesty. Since its debut on August 13, 1997, the show has expanded into a massive, successful franchise.
As of March 29, 2023, South Park has aired 325 episodes, finishing its 26th Season. The show was renewed in August 2021 to hit 30 Seasons through 2027, with 14 biannual specials exclusive to Paramount+. Four of the specials have been released (“South Park: Post Covid”, “South Park: Post Covid: The Return of Covid”, “South Park: The Streaming Wars”, “South Park: The Streaming Wars Part 2”), with “Joining the Panderverse” and nine more on the way.

South Park: Smart and Funny, Get Over It
On October 11, 2023, South Park Studios uploaded the teaser to South Park: Joining the Panderverse. According to the blurb, Cartman’s recurring nightmares foretell an end to everything he knows and loves. Longtime viewers can readily tell that Cartman’s worldview will be challenged in the politically correct climate. Meanwhile, the adult populace finds their lives threatened by the advent of AI (artificial intelligence).
As per the series’ satirical MO, the teaser gives audiences a glimpse of fans’ favorite characters reimagined in new, exciting ways. Eric Cartman, Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, Butters Stotch, and Kenny McCormick are all portrayed by women of different backgrounds, adding a new level of diversity to the main cast. This, of course, lampoons the ongoing practice of adapting established characters in a long-running franchise to better represent current socio-political standards.
PC Principal’s retort to the original Kyle mocks both sides of the discussion on having actors play established characters to whom they bear very little resemblance. The event’s title is additionally a pun on Sony’s Spider-Verse films, with “pander” referring to how changing beloved characters’ races supposedly caters to liberal audiences.
Although not showcased in the teaser, the AI plotline could be alluding to the controversy surrounding the technology, namely in how it affects the art and entertainment industries. This year, both the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA simultaneously went on strike over a labor dispute with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).
Both organizations seek to improve job security and limit AI usage. The WGA ended their strike on September 27, with their new contract ratified on October 9. The SAG-AFTRA strike, which began on July 14, is still ongoing as of writing; negotiations were suspended on October 11, 2023.
The hit, long-running animated series has always had fun skewering popular culture, relevant social topics, and subject matter. It appears this new special will be no exception. It should make for quite an entertaining animated comedy experience.
