A Journey of Cultural Discovery

SHŌGUN

Rachel Kondo, co-creator and executive producer, delves into the heart of the series, highlighting its significance in today’s global landscape.

“I think everybody here will have their own answer specifically, but for me personally, when we came to the project many moons ago, I thought, my god, this is great. I finally have a project in which I feel, as a Japanese American woman, I have something to contribute and something to say.”

A Modern Relevance in Historical Narratives

SHŌGUN

The series’ relevance to contemporary audiences lies in its nuanced portrayal of cultural exchange and understanding. Michaela Clavell, representing the estate of James Clavell, the author of the novel on which the series is based, emphasizes this aspect.

“How it relates to present day is that, like ‘Blackthorne,’ coming into a new set of cultural ideas and philosophies, ways to live by possibilities. That has merit today, where we’re all looking – or I am, anyway. I’m looking for – I look for how to live my best life. And, you know, there are many philosophies within Shōgun to choose from.”

A Reflection of Today’s Globalized World

SHŌGUN

Shōgun mirrors our globalized world’s complexities and the continuous interplay of different cultures. Justin Marks, another co-creator, highlights this aspect:

“You just get humbled and humbled and humbled, and every department head, every crew member goes through this process until you finally kind of come to it, almost on your knees, you know, kind of spiritually in some sense, to say, okay, now I’m ready to listen. Now I’m ready to understand what we’ve been doing wrong.”

Being 6’ 4” and Asian, he never really fit in, so he got comfortable standing out.
