The official trailer has finally arrived for Deadpool & Wolverine, the long-awaited threequel to the Deadpool film franchise. The film at last delivers some glorious new footage of stars Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds teaming up and fighting each other as their iconic Marvel comic book alter-egos.

DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE TRAILER DELIVERS TONS OF IRREVERENT META-HUMOR

It looks like MCU fans are in for quite the ride this summer as the new film creates an irreverent, unlikely duo between Hugh Jackman’s Logan, aka Wolverine, and Reynolds’ Wade Wilson, aka The Merc With a Mouth. It looks like Deadpool is in desperate need of Wolverine’s help, despite Wolverine’s reluctance to help the snarky mutant assassin, and the plot involves not only the Time Variance Association but saving Wade’s entire timeline.

Interestingly enough, the trailer also offers the first look at Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova, the villain of the film. In the comics, Cassandra Nova is the wicked, evil twin of Professor Charles Xavier. Here, it looks like she’s a powerful telepath, and she can control our heroes’ actions without just a thought and a wave of her fingers.

It looks like the unlikely duo will be in the fight of their lives to save the Sacred Timeline, or at least one or perhaps multiple timelines in this new adventure. The trailer is also chock-full of Easter eggs. It looks like there’s even a post-apocalyptic, Mad Max-style timeline. There looks to be a giant decapitated skull of Ant-Man/Giant-Man, aka Scott Lang, with his large mask lifting up over Giant Man’s skull remains. So it looks like Scott Lang, or possibly Hank Pym, met a grisly fate in this reality that the duo finds themselves in.

There’s lots of action of Jackman wearing his iconic Wolverine costume as well. However, he never once wears a mask in any of the footage and scenes. While the upcoming sequel finally delivers on Jackman wearing the iconic Wolverine costume, it looks like he will rarely wear the mask throughout the film. It seems like that’s one old habit of the old X-Men films that remains intact for this new sequel.

Of course, there’s a ton of low-brow, fourth-wall-breaking humor as well. Wade and Blind Al (Leslie Uggams) joke about doing cocaine. Wade pointedly whispers, “Cocaine is the one thing Feige said is off-limits!” They then trade a bunch of back-and-forth jokes about slang terms for cocaine. Reynolds and co. are clearly having fun with the fact that Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios are releasing this film and now producing the irreverent, R-rated exploits of the Deadpool family.
