Adam Sandler is reviving one of his most iconic film roles for a new legacy sequel coming from Netflix. Netflix announced this week that Happy Gilmore 2 is in the works for the steamer. The new sequel will catch up with Gilmore since his Tour Championship win in 1996, with Sandler returning to his famous role.

Per Netflix, there’s no word on any alligators appearing in the film. Fans have wanted an update since the classic film’s release in 1996. Characters from the original even showed up in other Sandler films, such as Jack and Jill, Little Nicky, and Hubie Halloween.
HAPPY GILMORE 2 IS COMING TO NETFLIX WITH ADAM SANDLER BACK ON THE GREEN
The original film saw Adam Sandler as the rough-around-the-edges hockey player, Happy Gilmore, who pursued a career in golf to raise enough money to pay the IRS for his grandmother’s years of delinquent back taxes. He became the most unorthodox golf player the Tour Championship had ever seen, and he even had a knockdown brawl with the late Bob Barker of The Price Is Right fame.
During his journey, Happy was mentored by the one-handed Chubbs Petersen (the late, great Carl Weathers), and a homeless caddy played by Allen Covert. He was menaced by the arrogant Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald). He ultimately triumphed in the face of adversity, winning a championship tour.
It’s not yet clear how the upcoming sequel will resurrect Gilmore’s golf career. It’s also unclear which cast members from the original will return for the sequel, besides Sandler. His love interest, Virginia Venit, was portrayed by Julie Bowen. Hopefully, both Bowen and McDonald will reprise their roles as Virginia and Shooter McGavin.
The original film was a breakout hit for Sandler, grossing $38 million domestically off of a $12 million budget. The film’s popularity only grew as it became a beloved, generational comedy of the 1990s. From there, Sandler’s stardom only grew bigger, starring in a string of more hit comedies, including The Wedding Singer, The Waterboy, and Big Daddy.
The new film continues Sandler’s long-ongoing partnership with Netflix. As previously noted, he’s also working on a new comedy special for the streamer. The special will see Sandler re-team with Uncut Gems co-director, Josh Safdie.
