During the panel, showrunner and executive producer Ian McCulloch shared his journey from initial hesitation to a full embrace of adapting Robert McCammon’s novel Stinger. McCulloch expressed his initial doubts about turning a novel of such grand scale into a series, given his preference for “keyhole epics”—intimate, tightly focused narratives like Signs, The Thing, and A Quiet Place.

However, after reading Stinger, the story stayed with him. McCulloch envisioned an adaptation that stripped away the large ensemble and giant set pieces, focusing instead on the core elements that made the novel compelling. This vision resulted in TEACUP, a series that he describes as “a puzzle-box mystery, an edge-of-your-seat thriller, a can’t-but-must-look horror story, a family drama, and a science fiction epic.”

Words from Executive Producer James Wan

Executive producer James Wan echoed McCulloch’s sentiments, highlighting the potential he saw in Stinger for a captivating series. Wan praised McCulloch’s ability to blend horror, mystery, and drama, creating a series that is both atmospheric and rich in humanity. He emphasized the stellar cast, led by Yvonne Strahovski, Scott Speedman, and Chaske Spencer, promising fans an unforgettable experience.

TEACUP defies easy labels,” said Wan. “It’s a genre-bending blend of horror, mystery, and drama, with layers that unfold like a captivating puzzle. It goes beyond chills and thrills and holds up a mirror to humanity, exploring the darkness that resides within us all.”
