“This doesn’t happen overnight. So I would say literally as soon as these walls go down at the end of the con, we start planning for the next year. We definitely want to make sure that each area represents the fandom that we’re showcasing,” Wu explained.

This meticulous planning ensures that each brand is authentically represented, creating a mini-universe within the convention hall. The Mattel team starts their preparations immediately after the previous year’s con ends, reflecting their dedication to delivering a memorable experience. Each themed area at the booth is carefully crafted to resonate with fans, showcasing the essence of the respective brands.

Katharine “Katie” Buford, Vice President of Marketing for the Vehicles category, emphasized the collaborative effort involved.

“A lot of it’s done in collaboration with some of our biggest partners. So Hot Wheels, for example, we’ve got an amazing set in collaboration with Warner Brothers celebrating Batman’s 85th Anniversary,” she said.

This partnership highlights Mattel’s ability to merge popular culture with their product lines, creating unique experiences for attendees. Working closely with major partners like Warner Brothers allows Mattel to produce exclusive, high-quality displays that not only celebrate their brands but also engage fans with exciting, culturally relevant content.

“It is seeing sort of the youngest fans here as well, just sort of makes you realize, like, oh my gosh, that is super pure and special. And so a lot of that has been happening by our Raceverse display,” Wu remarked.

The Raceverse display, featuring Hot Wheels racers inspired by popular intellectual properties, captivated young attendees and underscored Mattel’s commitment to creating memorable experiences. “Personally, you know, when I’m looking at Hot Wheels, it’s one of the brands I work on. There’s a lot of, I think, online discussion around Acceleracers, which was a sort of animated series back around 2003. And so that’s one that I would say maybe we take a look at just because the fandom is so loud,” he revealed.

Katie echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of fan feedback.

“We are always looking for fan input, always reading the forums and all of the blogs. So we eagerly await your comments, and we love to hear what your fans think,” she added.
