Godzilla Minus One has made history at the 2024 Academy Awards by taking home the award for Best Visual Effects. This was the first Academy Award for any Godzilla film while also Godzilla Minus One is the first Japanese Language film to rack up a win in the VFX category.

The film was written and directed by Takasha Yamazaki, who also oversaw the film’s visual effects which has grossed over $50 million at the box office. This made it the highest-grossing Japanese Live Action or Japanese Animated film ever released in the United States. The film is currently the fifth Highest Grossing non-English language film in US box office history.

THE EPIC SUCCESS OF GODZILLA MINUS ONE

The 2023 Japanese film was the 37th film in the Godzilla franchise. It quickly debuted at number one at the Japanese box office and during opening weekend, it grossed $1.2 million from 49 IMAX theaters, leading the film to become the largest opening for a live-action Japanese film in that format. It first debuted in Japan in November 2023 and a month later, it was released in the United States.

While it had mixed reviews in Japan, American critics praised the visual effects, the touching human drama and the usage of the Kaiju metaphor for social commentary. It wildly became known as one of the best films of 2023 and the greatest Godzilla movie ever made. The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 98% of 173 critics’ reviews were positive with an average rating of 8.4/10.

Different filmmakers have also praised the successful film, such as Hideaki Anno, the co-director of Shin Godzilla. he called the film “well-made” and praised the film’s technical prowess. 2014’s Godzilla director Gareth Edwards has even admitted to feeling “jealous” and adding that “this is what a Godzilla movie should be.” Edwards has also agreed to be mentioned as a candidate for the best Godzilla movie of all time.
