The Portable Door is the next project for Jim Henson’s company to produce, which no doubt means it will be bringing its magical touch to special effects and puppetry.

With Goblins and magic, it sounds alot like a Harry Potter movie. And like Harry Potter, it is based off a series of books. This one’s by Tom Holt, which begins with a book titled You Don’t Have to be Evil to Work, Here but it Helps. The book’s synopsis is below:

Starting a new job is always stressful, but when Paul Carpenter arrives at the office of H.W. Wells, he has no idea what trouble lies in store. Because he is about to discover that the apparently respectable establishment now paying his salary is in fact a front for a deeply sinister organization that has a mighty peculiar agenda. It seems that half the time his bosses are away with the fairies. But they’re not, of course. They’re away with the goblins.

The Portable Door is a series of satirical fantastic novels that takes us into the world of mysterious J.W Wells & Co. A seemly ordinary corporate firm that specializes in magic.

Plenty of clever titles to go around.

Christoph Waltz is set to star as charismatic villain Humphrey Wells, the CEO of the company, who is disrupting the world of magic by bringing modern corporate strategy to ancient magical practices. Guy Pearce will be playing the shape-shifting goblin trapped in the organization’s middle management. Actor Patrick Gibson will play protagonist Paul Carpenter, while Jeffrey Walker directs and Leon Ford adapts the script.

According to Gizmodo, the Jim Henson Company has high hopes for the project, with CEO Lisa Henson praising its “crowd-pleasing franchise potential” as well as “its relatable, gritty humor made popular in shows like The Office, and its rich, Harry Potter-like, high-fantasy setting.”

The Portable Door sounds very interesting for sure and Jim Henson’s company usually brings fun and fantasy to the screen. The film is still in the pre-production stages so there is no word on a release date, but we’ll be keeping our Sauron eye on this one
