Warner Bros. has released a preview clip of their new animated film, Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge, which introduces us to the main characters.

A preview clip has been released of Warner Bros.’s new project, Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge.

This scene serves as the introduction to the four main characters of the film: Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage and Lord Raiden. They are all aboard a ship heading to the tournament, located beyond The Veil.

Liu Kang is presented as a dedicated Shaolin monk of the White Lotus Society, determined to save Earth Realm. Johnny Cage flaunts his super stardome to the group and is completely convinced he is on a film set. He’s completely unaware of the challenges ahead for the survival of his team and the people of earth. Sonya Blade is a US soldier who is completely uninterested in Johnny’s early attempts at introductions. Raiden provides exposition on where they’re heading and what their goal is.

So far, based on the clip, the story seems to be on the right track so far. The characters are accurately portrayed as they normally are. There is a seriousness in the series that is carried throughout the clip, and Johnny’s reaction to the whole introduction of the start of their journey adds a comedic feel to the movie.

I couldn’t help but be reminded of the 1995 film Mortal Kombat. The same scene is presented with, of course, some minor and major differences. One of them being live action and having a darker aesthetic, but both clips serve the purpose of the introduction of the characters and what they are setting out to accomplish.

In the 1995 film, Liu Kang is more estranged from the White Lotus Society, Sonya Blade is still a determined soldier out to get her nemesis, and Johnny cage is not as physically flashy as in the animation, but his super star ego is very much still intact. Raiden has a more comedic tone to him in the live action film, whereas in the animation he is much more serious about the situation.

Overall, I have high hopes for this new animation film and I am very curious as to how close to accurate each character is portrayed and what new aspects of the story will be presented in the show.

Ethan Spaulding will be directing the film and the script has been written by Jeremy Adams. The stars of the film are Joel McHale, Jennifer Carpenter, Jordan Rodrigues, Steve Blum, Artt Butler, Darin De Paul, Robin Atkin Downes, David B. Mitchell, Ike Amadi, Kevin Michael Richardson, Grey Griffin, and Fred Tatasciore.

Warner Bros. Animation will be releasing Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge digitally on April 12. A Blu-ray and DVD release will be on April 28. Are you excited for the film to drop tomorrow? Let us know in the comments below.
