Seth Rogen has just solved a recently evolving mystery for the film world.

The movie industry over the past couple decades has been increasingly dominated by superhero movies, which fans have mostly supported in droves when theaters have been open. One of the specific movie genres that has seemingly been less outwardly present is comedies, of which fewer and fewer seem to release as the years go on.

This doesn’t mean they aren’t as good as they used to be, or that comedy stars and writers aren’t finding success anymore with movie that make fans fall out of their seats laughing. One of the most prominent comedy stars of the current era, Seth Rogen, even recently likened the genre to superhero movies themselves.

In a recent interview with Games Radar, comedy icon Seth Rogen recently opened up on chats with his producing partner Evan Goldberg on how Marvel movies particular are the comedies of today. He gave these quotes describing how Disney and Marvel Studios find a way to keep producing some of the funniest and most entertaining movies in the business:

[We] talk about a lot is how Marvel movies are comedies. Thor: Ragnarok is a comedy. Ant-Man is a comedy at its core. So that’s what’s out there. There are $200 million comedies out there, and so that’s something, as a comedic filmmaker, to be aware of. That is the benchmark that people expect!

For better or worse, Marvel has always worked some kind of comedy aspect into nearly every movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Characters like Iron Man and Spider-Man do seem to be more naturally inclined to crack jones and quips on a regular basis from their history in the comics, but the studio has even used movies like Thor: Ragnarok to allow people like Taika Waititi to showcase just how funny these movies can be.

Even looking into some of the movies with extremely high stakes and serious consequences like Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Infintiy War, Marvel seems to have their comedic formula down to a science on when to have hilarious moments pop up in their movies. They understand that these movies are meant to be a fun time, and if they can make people laugh while still putting out high quality movies, they’ll try to do it every single time.

The great thing too about Rogen’s comments is that they didn’t seem derogatory or negative in any way. After serving as a producer, writer, director, and/or actor in comedies like This Is The End, The Night Before, Sausage Party and more, Rogen has made quite the name for himself and seems to have a great deal of respect for what Marvel has done over the past decade and change.

Rogen is currently starting in An American Pickle, which just released last week. Marvel Studios is working up to the release of multiple projects in theaters and on Disney+ including Black Widow, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, and WandaVision.
