Tomb Raider Movie and Series Coming To Amazon Prime Signals MCU Scale Ambitions For Adventure Franchise Reboot

A new Tomb Raider cinematic universe is in development for Amazon Prime Video.

Amazon has begun work on a Tomb Raider franchise reboot with a plan similar to the scale of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This Tomb Raider adaptation has been reported to include movie installments and TV series as planned releases for the iconic action hero, which previously saw the titular character portrayed by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander. This will be a highlighted feature franchise for the streaming platform, which recently aired Lord Of The Rings prequel series, Rings of Power.

Tomb Raider originated as an action-adventure video game created by the British gaming company, Core Design. The video games featured the player taking on the role of an archaeologist adventurer, Lara Croft, who navigated a series of ancient ruins and tombs in search of artifacts.

The first game featured on platforms such as PlayStation and Sega Saturn, with various sequels and spin-offs. The first movie adaptation followed in 2001, with Angelina Jolie bringing Lara Croft to life, which was followed by a sequel in 2003.

Evolution of Tomb Raider Video Games

The video game series was rebooted in 2013 and marked the start of the Survivor trilogy that explored a new version of the origins of Lara Croft. This also led to a new movie for the franchise, which starred Alicia Vikander as the Lara Croft featured in the rebooted series.

Although the 2018 Tomb Raider movie performed well, the sequel was scrapped due to the window passing for production, which led to a bidding war for the rights. Fans have been awaiting the plans for the franchise as many hoped for the iconic female adventure-action hero to return.

Amazon Building A New Tomb Raider Universe From The Ground Up

Planning has begun for Amazon to create a series of releases for the franchise, including a movie and a TV series, which will create a full cinematic journey to enjoy. The streaming platform will be teaming with Dmitri M. Johnson from dj2 Entertainment to create the first movie, followed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge recently announced to be working on the script for the following TV series. A video game has also been reported to be part of the grand scheme to create interconnected content for fans to dive into.

Past Tomb Raider Movies featuring Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander

This grand plan for the series seems extremely ambitious, but the success of Rings Of Power has given Amazon the fire they need to forge greater plans. It will be interesting to find out who will play the role of Lara Croft after Vikander, who did such a fantastic job that fans were upset to discover the sequel was scrapped. It is unlikely she will return, but that all depends on the plans for the world being built.  Netflix and dj2 Entertainment finished a deal in February 2022 for a Tomb Raider anime series for two seasons, which could lead to more promising releases.

The first releases from the reboot for Amazon have yet to be revealed. Keep following for all announcements and updates as they are released regarding the planned Tomb Raider movies, video games, and upcoming series.

Long time fan of Tokusatsu fan since Power Rangers was first released in the 90s. Whereas most Superhero fans grew up with DC Comics and Marvel, my childhood was surrounded by releases from Saban Entertainment such as Beetleborgs, along with anime, and other various fads of the generation. Anime is also a great passion with Digimon, That Time I Was Reincarnated As A Slime, and Demon Slayer being significant favorites. It was the love of both Power Rangers and Digimon that led to the path of becoming a Senior Writer for The Illuminerdi.
