Guardians of the Galaxy 3’s James Gunn Explains “Emotional” Next Chapter and New Still Reveal

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 looks to be a heavy, emotional event. Writer and director James Gunn bids his farewell to the franchise with this exciting, emotional new chapter, and he recently spoke to Empire Online on the upcoming sequel, along with a very intense still from the film, which Gunn also shared on Twitter below:

THE GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY FACE AN EMOTIONAL END TO THEIR JOURNEY IN VOL. 3

The new still shows Nebula (Karen Gillan), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) together, but they look to be in dire straights and have already taken some heavy damage. It looks like the Guardians are going to be put through the wringer for this final last adventure together.

The new movie will mark the last time the current Guardians cast is onscreen together. Speaking to Empire on this being a much more emotional story, Gunn stated, “This third movie is much, much more emotional.” He continued, “We have this other story, of this group of people who made each other’s careers at the same time. We grew up together in that respect. None of us were big stars when it started out. Zoë [Saldaña] was the biggest.”

With regards to the time period where he was fired by Disney before the public outcry and support, with the cast of the film along with them, leading to his eventual return to the franchise, Gunn added, “We went through this journey where we went into the belly of the beast, and I was thrown out – and the people that I gave life to by hiring, saved me and brought me back into the fold.” He went on to Empire Online, “They pulled me onto the life raft. And now we’re able to finish all of this together. So when they see this footage [at Comic-Con], they’re reminded of this whole emotional journey we’ve all been on.”

While the time he was on the outs from Disney was hard, Gunn noted the positive memories he had at that time, such as when his actors came to his home and remained friends with him and helped him feel better. He liked it to that moment with Groot near the end of the first film, when the Guardians team came together, and Groot said, “We are Groot.”

While the wait was a little longer than expected, it looks like the payoff for Vol. 3 will be worth it. It looks like it will be the most gutwrenching, tear-jerking ride for the Guardians to date. And the release is just a matter of days away.
