The Legendary Monsterverse is back and coming to the big screen once again in 2024. Legendary Pictures announced this week the next installment in the Monsterverse franchise, with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire! The new sequel to 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong arrives in March 2024.

THE TITANS RETURN IN GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE

The new teaser features Kong sitting on what appears to be his throne from the Hollow Earth realm that was discovered in the previous movie. The camera then pans out to what appears to be skulls of both Godzilla and Kong. If Godzilla and Kong will be friends or foes in the upcoming film, that remains to be seen. However, it is notable that there is no “vs.” or “versus” in the title. So, it looks like the two ancient longtime foes will be uneasy allies once again.

According to the official synopsis from Legendary, the new film will pit both Godzilla and Kong against a “colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging our their very existence — and our own.” It continues, “The epic new film will delve further into the histories of these Titans, their origins, and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.”

Adam Wingard (Death Note, Blair Witch), who directed Godzilla vs. Kong, is back behind the helm for the sequel. The new movie will also feature the return of Rebecca Hall as Dr. Ilene Andrews from the last movie, along with Brian Tyree Henry as Bernie Hayes. Joining the cast are Dan Stevens (Disney’s Beauty and the Beast), Rachel House (Thor Ragnarok), and Alex Ferns.

Besides the new Godzilla x Kong movie, Legendary is also hard at work on a spinoff Monsterverse television series, Monarch, that is currently in the works for Apple TV+. Matt Shakman (Marvel’s WandaVision) is part of the show’s creative team.

While the last installment of the franchise only made about $100 million domestically, it still made a total of $470 million at the worldwide box office. That was with Warner Bros. Pictures releasing the film day and date in theaters and HBO Max on the same date. So, the movie had virtually no exclusive theatrical release. That will be changing with Warner Bros. giving The New Empire its own exclusive theatrical window for its March 2024 release.

It should be interesting to see what threat that Legendary comes up with to have Godzilla and Kong team up once again. In the last movie, it was Mechagodzilla. It appears the new threat is more Titan-related and not a man-made mecha-Titan this time around. How the film will delve further into the mythology of the Monsterverse and the Titans also sounds fascinating.
