With Nicole Kidman in a leading role, the series is already generating buzz. Joining her are notable actors Sarayu Blue, Ji-young Yoo, Brian Tee, and Jack Huston. Both Kidman and Wang have also taken on the role of executive producers, ensuring the series aligns with their shared vision.
A Story Set in the Heart of Hong Kong
Expats transports viewers to 2014 Hong Kong, where the lives of three American women—Margaret, Hilary, and Mercy—become intricately linked after a heart-wrenching family tragedy. The narrative delves deep into themes of privilege, blurred lines of victimhood, and the intricate dynamics of relationships.

Lulu Wang’s multifaceted involvement as the creator, director, and writer guarantees a unique touch to Expats. The series is further enriched by a team of executive producers including Daniele Melia, Nicole Kidman, Per Saari, Alice Bell, Theresa Park, and Stan Wlodkowski. The script is penned by a talented team comprising Vera Miao, Gursimran Sandhu, Janice Y. K. Lee, Alice Bell, and Wang herself.
European fans are in for a treat as the feature-length penultimate episode of Expats will be showcased at the BFI’s London International Film Festival on October 9, ahead of its official release. And those of us fortunate enough to attend TIFF also saw the penultimate episode. It was kind of a surreal experience, as it magnificently captures an experience many of my family have lived and many are still living. The story and performances are immaculate, but that level of realism was mind-blowing.
With its compelling storyline, exceptional cast, and the genius of Lulu Wang, Expats is poised to be a standout series on Prime Video. Especially for those who have, or are close to, the immigrant experience. As January 26, 2024, approaches, fans worldwide are gearing up for a series that promises both entertainment and introspection.
