Five Nights at Freddy’s, the long-awaited and highly anticipated live-action film adaptation of the popular game series, is finally hitting theaters later this month. According to producer Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions, the film has already recouped the cost of its budget through the sale of its streaming and theatrical rights!
FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY’S FILM MADE BACK ITS BUDGET ALREADY
During a recent interview with Fortune, the producer stated that the film adaptation already made back the money spent on it before hitting the big screen. This was accomplished through the sale of the film’s streaming and theatrical distribution rights. It makes sense the film gained a lot of interest due to it being an adaptation of a popular game series created by Scott Cawthon.
Not to mention, Blum has a fairly consistent track record of making highly profitable and successful films on very small budgets. Case in point, the new horror movie M3GAN, released earlier this year, grossed $95 million domestically and $181 million worldwide off of a $12 million budget. For another comparison, the original Paranormal Activity cost $15 million. The franchise has since grossed nearly $1 billion.
Also, taking a look at Happy Death Day, Blumhouse’s film cost about $5 million, and it ended up making $55 million domestically and $125 million worldwide. In short, Jason Blum is producing hit after hit and making some of the most profitable films in town.
Meanwhile, Five Nights at Freddy’s has a reported budget of about $25 million. That means the threshold for the success of the film is a lot lower than many other major blockbusters, which cost considerably more, usually in the range of $150-$250 million, if not more these days.
The upcoming film follows a troubled security guard (Josh Hutcherson), who starts working at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. During his first night on the job, he finds out that his night shift at the joint won’t be as easy as he expected as he struggles to make it through the night.
The film also stars Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, Kat Conner Sterling, Mary Stuart Masterson, and Matthew Lillard. It also features animatronic characters created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, which looks to have been a no-brainer for creating the characters of Five Nights at Freddy’s in a live-action film.
It should be interesting to see how the film performs since it’s getting both a day and date release. While some films have seen their theatrical releases hurt by day and date releases in the past, it likely won’t have as big of an effect on Five Nights since it’s a low-budget horror film.
Five Nights at Freddy’s will be hitting theaters and streaming on Peacock with a day and date release on Oct. 27, just in time for Halloween. The film is directed by Emma Tammi and it’s produced by Blum and Scott Cawthon, who created the original game series. It’s also executive produced by Bea Sequeira, Russell Binder, Marc Mostman, and Christopher H. Warner.
