The planned Daredevil: Born Again series is undergoing a creator overhaul at Marvel Studios. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show has a new creative team joining its ranks. Specifically, Dario Scardapane (Jack Ryan, Marvel’s The Punisher) has signed on to serve as the new showrunner of the series.

Additionally, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, who worked on Marvel’s Moon Knight and Loki, have been brought on to helm the remaining unproduced episodes for the show’s first season. The co-directing team recently directed multiple episodes of the second series of the acclaimed series Loki. Daredevil: Born Again was announced in 2022 as a follow-up to the original Netflix series, and it’s in the works for Disney+.

The news comes after Marvel opted to make a creative shift in the series. The series had finished shooting several episodes and was midway through production in New York City when it was forced to halt due to the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and actors union’s (SAG-AFTRA) respective labor disputes against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).
During that time, Marvel Studios executives reviewed the footage, and they apparently weren’t overly enthusiastic with what they saw. They decided to take the show in a new direction. Chris Ord and Matt Corman were previously the lead writers on the show before they were essentially dismissed and replaced by Dario Scardapane.
The series will feature Charlie Cox reprising his role as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, with Vincent D’Onofrio once again returning as Wilson Fisk, aka The Kingpin. According to THR’s report, Marvel Studios wanted the new series to venture closer to the action-heavy and grittier violence of the Netflix series, which lasted for three seasons and 39 episodes. The show ran from 2015-2018. Cox also starred in the Netflix miniseries, The Defenders, which featured the characters of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist all teaming up together.
THR also reports that Marvel Studios plans to keep some scenes and episodes from Born Again that have already been shot. However, the plan is to reportedly inject other serialized elements. The plan is to reportedly have Scardapane write new episodes and new scenes that will incorporate what’s already been shot.
Meanwhile, Benson and Moorhead will direct the remaining new episodes for the first season. When the show was first announced, it was announced as 18 episodes. Now, it’s unclear how many episodes the first season will run. Corman and Ord will still be credited as executive producers for the series.
As an overview, the new showrunners are said to be part of a larger overhaul for Marvel Studios and its TV shows. Previously, Marvel shot its streaming shows similar to its movies. However, that model has now reportedly been reconfigured, with Marvel embracing more TV concepts for its upcoming TV projects, which will include showrunners, pilots, and series bibles.
D’Onofrio made his initial return to the role of Kingpin in Marvel’s Hawkeye miniseries, which debuted in 2021. Meanwhile, Cox reprised his role as Daredevil/Murdock in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law the following year. Both characters will also be appearing in the new Marvel TV series, Echo, which will pick up the character of Maya Lopez/Echo from Hawkeye.
Echo is set to launch on Disney+ in January 2024, with all five episodes available at launch. The show has also received a TV-MA rating, which is a first for a Marvel Disney+ series, and it’s a similar rating to the Marvel Netflix shows before they were canceled.
Marvel Studios won’t be able to resume filming on Daredevil: Born Again until the SAG-AFTRA strike is resolved. The WGA strike was resolved in September. The SAG-AFTRA strike began on July 14, and the union is said to be reviewing a recent offer from the studios. Deliberations are expected to continue on Monday, Nov. 6. However, filming won’t be able to start again on the show until the strike issues are resolved.
