In July, Chris Jericho had an episode of his podcast, Talk Is Jericho, dedicated to the history of the VPW promotion.  During the episode, Jericho talked to the owner of VPW, Rocky Huynh, and its English commentator, Carey Wass, about the origin of the promotion. The interview must have gone very well because just five months later Chris Jericho was in a VPW ring.

During a recent interview with WFAA, Chris Jericho talked about wanting to make a documentary about VPW and what inspired him.  He said it came to him after recording his own podcast with Huynh and Wass.

“After the podcast was over, [I was] kind of listening to what they went through to get it started, and the passion they had. They didn’t even have a wrestling ring at first, they wrestled on mats. I thought there was a very interesting documentary in there, and I’ve done a couple of documentaries so far. And I thought let me send a film crew there and let’s get a movie out of it. So the guys were there, probably about ten days before I was, but I knew I wanted to be there.

“We didn’t even know what capacity, but while I was there, we came up with the ending of the documentary. It’s going to be really cool, very heartwarming, and it’s going to once again show that pro wrestling is this entity that is worldwide. It’s not just here in the States, it’s not just in Canada, it’s everywhere. And it makes people happy and gives them a chance to live their dreams, no matter what country you happen to be born in. And I just thought ‘That’s a story I wanted to tell.'”

Chris Jericho Planning Documentary About Vietnam Wrestling

Jericho did not wrestle a match in VPW, but he did cut a promo for the extremely excited crowd.  Unfortunately, the video cuts out before he begins speaking, but I bet it was a killer promo. Jericho is not new to working on wrestling documentaries.  He has been the narrator for a fantastic wrestling docuseries, Dark Side of the Ring.  He has been the narrator for seasons two through four.

Since the VPW documentary is still very early in development any details other than it is being worked on are unknown. Jericho is a world traveler and has wrestled all over the world in his long career.  He is currently wrestling for AEW and most of his matches take place in an AEW ring, but not all his matches.  One notable exception this year was his battle against Konosuke Takeshita in DDT last month.

All Good Things Must Come To An End

Jericho was involved in a storyline in which he teamed up with his sometime friend and sometime rival Kenny Omega.  The Golden Jets as they were referred to began feuding with The Don Callis Family, the current AEW World Tag Team Champions Ricky Starks and Big Bill and also defeated The Young Bucks at AEW Full Gear last month.

On Dec. 15, Omega revealed via a Twitter/X post that he will be out of action indefinitely.  Thus this ends the Golden Jets for now.  It has surfaced via Fightful that the mysterious illness is a serious case of diverticulitis.

How Omega’s absence affects AEW’s plans going into the new year is unknown. It is also not known how it will affect planned storylines for Jericho. Unfortunately, it looks like Omega will be out for quite some time. Hopefully, he will make a full and speedy recovery from diverticulitis.
