WWE WrestleMania 39 - Cody Rhodes

Bully Ray explained why Cody Rhodes should challenge the World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 40.  Cody Rhodes has a big choice ahead of him.  After winning the Men’s Royal Rumble match he gets to challenge for any championship in WWE, including the NXT Championship.

After Cody Rhodes won the Royal Rumble match the foregone conclusion was he would challenge Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns at WrestleMania.  However, on this week’s Monday Night Raw, World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins brought up an interesting point as to why Rollins is the correct choice for Rhodes’ WrestleMania 40 opponent.

On a recent episode of Busted Open Radio, WWE Hall of Famer Bully Ray explained why challenging for the World Heavyweight Championship and Seth Rollins is the better choice even if Cody Rhodes wants to avenge a loss. He stated the following:

“You can want to avenge the loss, but there has been nothing since the loss. There’s been no build with Cody. They haven’t told me the story of Cody losing sleep every night because of that loss. We haven’t had that Brandi and Cody moment like Rocky and Adrian, where Rocky has that self-doubt and Adrian tells him, ‘Come on. You can do this.’

“There’s been nothing there. Cody lost to Roman. He won the Rumble. And now, we’re assuming he’s going to make the challenge to Roman. But after hearing that Seth promo and guys, this is my emotions as a fan now, I’m like, ‘Wow. This is what I want to see.'”

At last year’s Wrestlemania, Cody Rhodes failed in his challenge to beat Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. The title was a major part of his finishing the story; his dad, Dusty Rhodes, and brother, Goldust, were never able to finish the story and win the WWE Championship.

Cody Rhodes Is Chasing a Legacy

During their segment on Monday Night Raw, Seth Rollins brought up the meaning and legacy that will be left by each championship.  The Undisputed WWE Universal Championship has become a shell of its former glory.  It is all glitz and glamor, but Reigns isn’t big on defending it.  Also when he does defend it he has to cheat to win.  As shown by Solo Sikoa interfering in Reign’s Royal Rumble match.

On the other hand, Rollins has proven himself a fighting champion. He defends the World Heavyweight Championship every chance he gets, including on Raw which rarely happens on weekly WWE TV anymore. He’s even defended the title while dealing with various injuries, and he’s proven that the holder of the World Heavyweight Championship is willing to grind and put in the hard work.

Hard work and hard times are what Cody Rhodes’ father, the legendary Dusty Rhodes, is all about.  Dusty was a working-class wrestler and the son of a plumber. He wasn’t a 6-foot-8-inch powerhouse.  He didn’t have a body that looked like it was carved out of stone.  Dusty went into every fight with the odds stacked against him, but when the bell rang he gave it his all.

Rollins claims because of the standard he has set as the holder of the World Heavyweight Championship it is what championship Dusty would be fighting for.  He asked what kind of champion Cody wanted to be?  A workhorse champion like his father or a champion like Reigns?

What Does ‘Finishing The Story’ Actually Mean?

Rhodes’ mission in WWE is to finish the story and finish what his dad started and win the WWE Championship, but that may not actually be the story.  What Rhodes is trying to do is win a world championship in WWE.  He thought that meant the WWE Championship, but the World Heavyweight Championship has just as much history when basing it on the name.

Cody Rhodes seemed to reflect on Rollins’ statement and responded that he was going to think on the matter. What this means for WrestleMania 40 remains to be seen. The two-day extravaganza isn’t until April 6 and 7, so he has plenty of time to make his final decision. Ultimately, behind the scenes, it will be Triple H’s call who Cody faces at the event.

Which championship do you think Rhodes should challenge for?  Do you think Dusty would have been going after the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship or the World Heavyweight Championship?  Who do you think is a better opponent for Rhodes, Rollins or Reigns?  Did Rollins’ speech change your mind as to who Rhodes should challenge?  Let us know on social media if you think Rhodes will walk out champion regardless of who he challenges.
