The comic book series has unleashed the Darkest Hour event as the comic way to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the franchise. Joining the Grid are new releases such as Ranger Academy and The Return, making Boom! Studios the best place for Power Rangers content in 2024. A new series has also started to run alongside the event as Power Rangers Unlimited: The Morphin Masters follows Ranger Slayer’s journey into the Grid.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #117 Reaches Deeper as Dark Spector’s Attack Spreads

BOOM! Studios, under license by leading toy and game company Hasbro, Inc. (NASDAQ: HAS), revealed a first look at issue #117, the continuation of the Darkest Hour event, taking place after the bold and greatly anticipated Reunited, Recharged era of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The superstar creative lineup includes writer Melissa Flores (Power Rangers, The Dead Lucky), artist Simona Di Gianfelice (All New Firefly) with Marco Renna (Mighty Morphin), colorist Raúl Angulo (Mech Cadet Yu) with assistance by Jose Enrique Fernández, and letterer Ed Dukeshire (The Woods, Irredeemable) in the continuation of this monumental 12-month event, available in February.

Things are desperate as the Dark Specter steps up an attack, with Rangers from different universes and civilians alike teaming up to keep the carnage at bay, but some special objects may be the key to keeping the planet safe… even if it won’t last for long. As Billy, Dr. Kendall Morgan, and the Phantom Ranger rush to repair the Master Arch, they’re only able to pull a single ally from the heart of the Morphin Grid as Dark Specter’s power grows…

Issue #117 features main cover art by star artist Taurin Clarke (Miles Morales: Spider-Man) and variant covers by acclaimed illustrators Björn Barends (Spawn), Goñi Montes (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers), and the first of three connecting covers by Michael Walsh (The Silver Coin)!

Celebrating 30 continuous years on the air, the franchise has become one of the longest-running kids’ live-action series in television history, with more than 900 episodes aired to date. Created by Haim Saban and launched in 1993 with the Mighty Morphin television series, the series celebrates its 30th year with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always, an anniversary special streaming exclusively on Netflix. The 30th overall season of the franchise, Cosmic Fury, is currently available exclusively on Netflix.

The Darkest Hour continues to drag even more Ranger series into the fold, creating a fantastic abundance of characters. It’s brilliant that Melissa Flores and the team are widening the net by allowing different teams to feature compared to Shattered Grid. The genius of the event is that Rangers are forced to become indoctrinated evil Rangers, rather than upsetting the timeline by ending their lives.

This powerful feature of the comic event allows this momentous story to become a permanent fixture, while also adding depth to the villain seen in Power Rangers In Space. It will be exciting to find out what else the team has planned and how much more the infection could spread for fans to witness.

Long time fan of Tokusatsu fan since Power Rangers was first released in the 90s. Whereas most Superhero fans grew up with DC Comics and Marvel, my childhood was surrounded by releases from Saban Entertainment such as Beetleborgs, along with anime, and other various fads of the generation. Anime is also a great passion with Digimon, That Time I Was Reincarnated As A Slime, and Demon Slayer being significant favorites. It was the love of both Power Rangers and Digimon that led to the path of becoming a Senior Writer for The Illuminerdi.
