HBO’s acclaimed anthology series True Detective is coming back for a fifth season, the network announced today, a few days after the last installment, True Detective: Night Country, concluded its run.
Issa López will be back as showrunner as part of a new multiyear, overall deal with HBO and Max that was also revealed as part of the announcement. That deal will allow López to create additional series for the network and/or the streaming platform, though these haven’t been revealed yet. Said López in a statement:
“From conception to release, Night Country has been the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life. HBO trusted my vision all the way, and the idea of bringing to life a new incarnation of True Detective with Casey, Francesca and the whole team is a dream come true. I can’t wait to go again.”

Francesca Orsi, head of HBO programming and HBO drama series and films, added in a statement:
“Issa Lopez is that one-of-a-kind, rare talent that speaks directly to HBO’s creative spirit. She helmed ‘True Detective: Night Country’ from start to finish, never once faltering from her own commendable vision, and inspiring us with her resilience both on the page and behind the camera. Alongside Jodie and Kali’s impeccable performances, she’s made this installation of the franchise a massive success, we are so lucky to have her as part of our family.”

True Detective: Night Country Was a Win for the Network
Night Country originally started as an independent murder mystery series that the network eventually suggested get retooled as a new season of True Detective, this time without creator and previous showrunner Nic Pizzolatto (he’s since been publicly bashing the new season, including a new Instagram post in which he allowed for his followers to spread hate on the new season.)
The season went on to become the most watched of all four, with 12.7 million viewers across platforms. It was also the highest rated on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 92% approval rating (vs. season 1’s 91%). The fifth season will likely move on from the setting and storyline of the fourth season, and it’s likely not even been mapped yet.
HBO is a network that likes to keep their friends close. It was also announced this week that Chernobyl and The Last of Us creator Craig Mazin is renewing his eight-figure, multiyear overall deal with the network. He’s currently busy shooting The Last of Us season 2 in Vancouver; a third season of the show has been planned.
