It’s shaping up to be a loaded early summer for TV, with The Boys and reportedly The Acolyte coming out in the first two weeks of June, but HBO is apparently on “Hold my beer” mode. According to the CEO of its parent company, the new season of House of the Dragon is targeting a Q2 release.
Warner Bros. Discovery’s chief exec, David Zaslav, said the following during the company’s Q4 earnings call with investors on Friday, “Looking ahead, we’ve got one of the best lineups in the history of HBO. This next quarter, we’ll have Hacks and House of the Dragon, followed by DC’s The Penguin and the new Dune series.”
We’ll focus on The Penguin and Dune on another story, but for now, let’s set our eyes on Westeros. The network announced late last year that the new season of the critically acclaimed series would be coming out during the summer when they dropped the first trailer for it. But with Zaslav now saying that it will be coming out “this next quarter”, the odds are that it will come out sometime in the last half of May, or most likely June.
When Exactly Will House of the Dragon Come Out?
Taking a quick look at the calendar, though, The Sympathizer starts airing on HBO on April 14. This is a big show for the network, as it stars Robert Downey Jr. (who will likely be an Oscar winner by then) and is directed and executive-produced by Park Chan-wook. That means they will not be undercutting it with another giant release like House of the Dragon.
Given The Sympathizer‘s seven-episode run, the first Sunday night that would be available for HBO to start airing Rhaenyra Targeryen’s latest crazy adventure would be June 2. HBO likes to have something on every Sunday, so they will likely do it then.
They could also take a week off, like they did for the 9 pm ET slot this weekend (Curb Your Enthusiasm is still on at 10 pm, though), as a buffering between the end of True Detective: Night Country and The Regime. In any case, if it is June like they’re saying, we’ll be hearing a lot about it over the next month. Season 2 will be eight episodes long.
Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Shoots This Year for 2025 Release
In addition, Zaslav also confirmed that the second Game of Thrones spin-off series, Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will start shooting this year (which they’d already said) eyeing a late 2025 release (which is news). He said on the subject, “[Creator and executive producer] George R.R. Martin is in preproduction for the new spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which will premiere in late 2025 on Max.”
The new series is based on Martin’s trio of Dunk and Egg novellas and will follow the adventures of “Dunk”, future Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, Ser Duncan the Tall, and “Egg”, future King Aegon V Targaryen. Here is the official synopsis:
“A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros … a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”
