A24: Surging Studio Bringing Its A-Game to SXSW 2024

A24 has been a fan favorite at SXSW year after year and this time around is no exception. Their movies are for the people and that is largely what makes them so successful. They’ve also been known to do fun events and parties to promote their projects as well as giveaways and activations. Festivals like SXSW are the perfect hub for the direction that this studio aims for so their four releases are rather fitting.

A24 has truly been making a name for themselves in the production studio department, tapping big star power to incorporate into their films. They’ve also gone on to garn major award recognition since their launch in 2013, with Moonlight being their first feature film. It also won the Oscar for Best Picture, despite the La La Land debacle that took place.

Their slate has quite a bit of heat, starting with Civil War, described as an adrenaline-fueled thrill ride through a near-future fractured America balanced on the razor’s edge. Written and directed by Alex Garland, it stars Kirsten Dunst, her husband Jesse Plemons, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Wagner Moura, and Nick Offerman. The film was a surprise announcement, as it was not one of the original seven headliners.

I Saw The TV Glow is about a teenager just trying to make it through life in the suburbs when his classmate introduces him to a mysterious late-night TV show — a vision of a supernatural world beneath their own. In the pale glow of the television, his view of reality begins to crack. The cast includes Justice Smith, Brigette Lundy-Paine, Ian Foremanm, Helena Howard, Fred Durst (yes, that Fred Durst), and Danielle Deadwyler. Fans lucky enough to see it early at SXSW will have two months to rave about it, as its release date is set for May 3rd.

Y2K is shaping up to be an unexpected hit. SNL star Kyle Mooney is directing and he has been making waves recently as being one of the funnier cast members in the recent seasons. It’s fair to say this alone is enough to draw moviegoers to the film with the anticipation of some Superbad-type comedy. Its premise is set on the last night of 1999, where two high school juniors crash a New Year’s Eve party, only to find themselves fighting for their lives in this dial-up disaster comedy.

Leading the cast is Rachel Zegler, joined by Lachlan Watson, Mason Gooding, The Kid Laroi, Eduardo Franco, Miles Robbins, Fred Hechinger, Alicia Silverstone, Tim Heidecker, Daniel Zolghadri, Sebastian Chacon, and Lauren Balone. There is still no official release date nor a trailer, but excitement for this one has been brewing online.

Last but not least is Sing Sing, the flick A24 won in a bidding war after the film premiered in Toronto to great reviews. Starring Colman Domingo, Clarence Maclin, Paul Raci, and Sean San Jose, it sees a theater troupe that escapes from the realities of incarceration through the creativity of putting on a play in this film based on a real-life rehabilitation program and featuring a cast that includes formerly incarcerated actors. Greg Kwedar is in the director’s seat with the movie’s release date still to be determined.
