Walt Disney Studios debuted the first look for the upcoming new installment of the iconic TRON film franchise, TRON: Ares, earlier today. The film recently started production in January last month, and it’s currently expected to be released in theaters later next year.

This will be the first film in the franchise to hit theaters since TRON: Legacy, which was released in 2010. The new film will follow a new cast and group of characters, and it’s currently filming now in Vancouver, Canada. You can check out the newly revealed image here:
THE GRID IS BACK IN TRON: ARES
According to Disney, the film will serve as a follow-up to the 1982 film, TRON, and the 2010 sequel, TRON: Legacy. Joachim Rønning (Maleficent: Mistress of Darkness, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) directs the upcoming feature. In the new installment, a highly sophisticated program, Ares, is sent from the digital world to the real world on a dangerous mission. This will mark the world’s first encounter with A.I. beings.
According to the filmmaker, the upcoming sequel will build upon the legacy of the previous films. Rønning said on the project, via a press release, “I’m excited to be part of the TRON franchise and bring this new film to fans around the world. TRON: Ares builds upon the legacy of cutting-edge design, technology, and storytelling. Now more than ever, it feels like the right time to return to the Grid.”
The new film stars Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, with Gillian Anderson. It’s produced by Sean Bailey, Jeffrey Silver, Justin Springer, Jared Leto, Emma Ludbrook, and Steven Lisberger. Russell Allen serves as executive producer.
Notably, none of the cast members from the previous two films are anywhere to be found. It looks like the story is completely moving on from the original and Legacy. Legacy ended with Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), the son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), escaping from the Grid along with Quorra, a race of programs that evolved spontaneously in Flynn’s new grid.

Quorra was able to manifest into the real world at the end. So, the plot of this film implies that Quorra’s existence remains hidden from the rest of the world. Their status here remains a complete mystery. Previously, Kevin Flynn appeared to sacrifice his life in the grid so his son and Quorra could escape. However, the Grid is a digital world after all. Who knows if Kevin Flynn is gone for good? It’s also unknown if Bruce Boxleitner, who portrayed the characters Alan Bradley and Tron in the films, will be back in his iconic role. It wouldn’t really be a proper TRON movie without him.
TRON: Ares does not yet have a final release date, but it’s due to arrive in theaters later next year (2025).
