Gunn announced the start of production via his Instagram by saying:

“Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday.

When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy. By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN. Making our way to July 2025.”

The cast features Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Other actors who are set to be in the film as well are Nathan Fillion as Green Lanterns, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen and Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher.

SUPERMAN will be the first theatrical release from the new DC Universe. The DC Extended Universe came to a close with the release of last year’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom which also brings to an end for Henry Cavill’s iteration of the character. In December 2022, Gunn tweeted an update on the Superman reboot by saying, “In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill. But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about several exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”
