Sydney Sweeney (Madame Web, Anyone But You, Immaculate)has just lined up her next project, and it’s a very interesting one where she will star as renowned, trailblazing boxing star Christy Martin. The upcoming film comes from director David Michôd (The Rover, Animal Kingdom) and will tell the true story of the female boxer who rose to stardom in the 1990s.

The currently untitled Christy Martin project features a script written by Mirrah Foulkes (Judy & Punch) and Michôd. It’s being produced by Black Bear, the award-winning studio behind such films as NYAD and The Imitation Game.

The upcoming picture is being produced by Kerry Kohansky-Roberts (The Stranger, Boy Erased) for Anonymous Content, along with David Michôd for Yoki, Inc., Justin Lothrop, and Brent Stiefel (As You Are) for Votiv, Sweeney for Fifty-Fifty Films, and Teddy Schwarzman for Black Bear. Black Bear announced that the studio is fully financing the project.
Executive producers include Michael Heimler, John Friedberg, Foulkes, and Brad Zimmerman for Yoki, Inc. David Levine, Ryan Schwartz, and Nick Shumaker are executive producing the picture on behalf of Anonymous Content. Additionally, Black Bear will introduce the project to international buyers at the Cannes Film Market with UTA Independent Film Group, AC Independent, Anonymous Content’s sales and finance division, and Black Bear all co-representing the film’s U.S. distribution rights.
The story will showcase the life and career of the real-life formidable boxer Christy Martin. She rose to prominence as the most successful woman in boxing in the 1990s. Martin’s life was transformed in 1989 when she met her manager and later husband, Jim Martin. She would later become the first woman to sign with the iconic boxing promoter Don King, and she’s the only female boxer who has ever appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
During her career, Christy’s success won her a wide fanbase, and she later went on to become a welterweight boxing champion. Throughout this time, Martin faced her personal demons, toxic relationships, and an attempt on her life. The story will showcase how a fighter’s hardest-won victories aren’t always achieved inside the squared circle.
Sweeney recently starred in the hit comedy Anyone But You and the critically acclaimed horror feature, Immaculate. Some of her acclaimed TV roles include the breakout hit HBO shows Euphoria and White Lotus. It looks like she’s looking for interesting, unique, and challenging roles now, and she’s clearly taking the reins on her career as she’s attached to this film as a producer.

Meanwhile, Michôd’s next upcoming film is Wizards!, which stars Pete Davidson and Franz Rogowski. It will be released in theaters later on by A24. The untitled Christy Martin picture does not yet have a release date. It should be interesting to see what Sweeney and Michôd create for their upcoming collaboration.
