Filming on The Rings of Power season 2 wrapped a year ago, and there’s already movement on season 3, which will also be shot in the UK after they moved in between seasons 1 and 2 away from New Zealand.

The trailer is mostly focused on the aftermath of the events of season 1 and Sauron’s return. Most of Middle-earth is now aware of it, which forces the Dark Lord to disguise himself once again — this time as the elf Annatar, who, in Tolkien’s writing, tries to convince Celebrimbor to forge the Rings of Power. And judging from the trailer, it looks like some of that will be incorporated in the new season too.

It’s been a busy week for the Lord of the Rings franchise all around. Warner Bros. Discovery announced during their quarterly earnings report last week that they will be releasing a new theatrical film titled The Hunt for Gollum in 2026, with Andy Serkis directing and starring, and Peter Jackson producing. They also have the anime The War of the Rohirrim coming out this Christmas.

Building on Season 1’s epic scope and ambition, Season 2 of Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power plunges even its most beloved and vulnerable characters into a rising tide of darkness, challenging each to find their place in a world that is increasingly on the brink of calamity. Elves and dwarves, orcs and men, wizards and Harfoots… as friendships are strained and kingdoms begin to fracture, the forces of good will struggle ever more valiantly to hold on to what matters to them most of all… each other.
