The new show is created by Doctor Who showrunner and executive producer Russell T. Davies. Davies also serves as a writer for the spinoff alongside Pete McTighe (A Discovery of Witches, The Pact, Doctor Who). The series will mark the return of the classic Doctor Who villains, the Sea Devils, who first appeared over 50 years ago in 1972.

Speaking on the announcement, Davis stated, “I’m so lucky to work with such a magnificent cast. And this is a huge, muscular, thrilling drama, which will shake The Whoniverse to its foundations. When the Doctor’s not in town, the whole of humanity is in trouble.”

Filming on the spinoff project will begin next month. The show will be directed by Dylan Holmes-Williams, who previously directed two episodes of the latest Doctor Who season, “73 Yards” and “Dot and Bubble.” The new show will air exclusively on Disney+ where available and on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the U.K.

The War Between the Land and the Sea is produced by Bad Wolf, with BBC Studios, for Disney Branded Television and BBC. Also serving as executive producers of the show are Phil Collinson, Joel Collins, Julie Gardner, and Jane Tranter.

A new spinoff for the iconic sci-fi franchise sounds pretty exciting, especially one that utilizes a classic villain. It should be interesting to see what Davies and company come up with. It also boasts an impressive cast as well.

Every episode of the new season of Doctor Who, starring Ncuti Gatwa as The Fifteenth Doctor, is streaming now on Disney+. The new TV specials featuring the return of David Tennant as the Doctor, along with Gatwa’s introduction as The Fifteenth Doctor are also available on the streamer.
