Paul Heyman reveals that the Bloodline was largely created by himself and Roman Reigns. He also revealed that it first began its development because Reigns was unhappy and felt like his character had plateaued.
Paul Heyman is not called The Wiseman for no reason. He has seen different eras of wrestling come and go and even helped to usher in the Hardcore era. He has seen the greats of wrestling rise and fall. Some of those greats he has even managed.
Wise is an understatement when discussing Paul Heyman’s knowledge of wrestling and his impact. So when WWE offers to let you work with him you take it. The same goes for when WWE offers to pair you with one of the top guys in WWE.
This is exactly what happened a few years ago when the foundations of the greatest faction of the current decade were being placed. During a recent interview with ScreenRant, Paul Heyman discussed how the concept of The Bloodline came about years prior to the debut.

“The concept of the Bloodline is something that Roman Reigns and I discussed seven or eight years ago. Several years before the actual inception of the Bloodline this was already a discussion between us. At the time, he was still fleshing out his persona in front of the WWE fan base, and doing so well in the main event multiple times of WrestleMania, which is extraordinary to think about. I was at the side of Brock Lesnar, and we were in the middle of an exceptionally hot run as well.
“So, the timing for Roman Reigns and Paul Heyman joined together was just never with all the stars aligned. It just was never the right time.”
Everything changed in 2020 with COVID. Brock Lesnar took a break from the company and went back home. Reigns, who was one of the top guys in the company, also left for medical reasons. He has a history of battling chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). The disease interferes with the body’s immune response and there was a concern of what would happen if he got COVID.

During Reigns’ time away from WWE his presence was missed and he missed WWE. Once safety measures were put in place to mitigate the risk of COVID to Reigns and WWE Superstars, Reigns decided he was ready to return.
Heyman details Reigns’ mindset and being unhappy with his character when he took time off from WWE.
“He [Reigns] was pretty fed up with the creative here, and he felt that his character had plateaued and he wanted to elevate not only his character, but the entire presentation of what we as performers do at WWE and how WWE presents its performers, and nothing that he was being pitched was to his liking … So when the suggestion came up of, ‘God, what are we going to do, just put you guys together?’
“Yes, that’s the answer that we’re both looking for, put us together, and once we got the green light on that, we started, Roman and I started comparing notes as to what disruptions of the industry we had both envisioned during this COVID period, and I think we both saw the opportunity for a different presentation within the restrictions of what we had because we had no live audience, and we understood what a detriment that was to the product.”
Heyman reveals that the inception of the Bloodline involved him and Reigns talking on a daily basis. They worked together to build up the greatest storyline in recent memory.
Heyman also admits that one of the main reasons the storyline worked so well was because of Reigns’ direct involvement. He compares Reigns’ involvement with actors, “Robert De Niro on the set with Martin Scorsese.” Heyman was also able to see comparisons with some of the legends of wrestling who were heavily involved in the creation and direction of their character including Hulk Hogan, Stone Cold Steve Austin, John Cena and The Rock.
Currently, Reigns is involved in a battle for the Tribal Chief title with his cousin Solo Sikoa. It’s a battle with the old Bloodline and the new Bloodline. It’s not easy being the Head of the Table.
Do you think the Bloodline is the best storyline of the current decade? If not, what storyline would you point to? Did you know Paul Heyman was so heavily involved in the Bloodline creation? Do you think it would have been as successful without Heyman? Let us know what direction you hope to see the Bloodline to go in this coming year.
