The wrestling world reacts to the AEW debut of Adam Copeland formerly known as Edge in WWE. On Oct. 1, at All Elite Wrestling’s WrestleDream pay-per-view event, Copeland shocked the world by making his AEW debut. His WWE contract ended and he was toying with the idea of retiring. However, he decided to experiment with a new young promotion in AEW.
Copeland had been with WWE since his debut with the company in the late ‘90s. He stayed with the promotion and never strayed to its rivals. Being loyal to WWE and returning to WWE once he was medically cleared made it seem like he would retire in WWE.
When Adam Copeland’s WWE contract ended WWE was interested in re-signing him. Obviously, that didn’t happen. All the reasons for his departure are only known entirely to him, but fans were not happy and had gone as far as saying WWE should take away his Hall of Fame induction. However, there doesn’t seem to be any hurt feelings on WWE’s side.
At the FastLane press conference, Triple H addressed a question about Copeland’s departure from WWE. The WWE Chief Creative Officer stated the following:
“Time was right for him, time was right for us. I think he had an amazing career and an amazing send-off here. I think he felt like he had done what there was to do. We sort of felt, ‘Yeah, think you’re right.’ I wish him the best.
“I think he said the other day, ‘there is no animosity here, there are no hard feelings.’ He’s doing what’s right for him and his family. I’m happy for him, very happy for him. I sent him that in a message, ‘I’m happy for you.’ I’m proud of him and happy for him. This has to be right for you. This is a grind, a lot of hard work, it has to be right for you. If somebody feels like a different opportunity is better for them, great, that’s wonderful, but the machine doesn’t stop for anyone. We’re going to continue to grow and continue to do what we do.”

WWE Lost Adam Copeland to AEW
Losing Copeland is a blow to WWE. He has the most experience of anyone in WWE. His knowledge and mentorship will be missed in WWE. Having someone they can throw into a high-profile match or feud and know the pressure won’t make them buckle will also be missed.
Copeland’s AEW debut was him breaking up his best friend, Christian Cage, from attacking Sting. On AEW Dynamite Copeland admitted he joined AEW because he wanted to end his career with Cage. The two hugged and it looked like they may be on the same page. However, Cage then replied “Go f**k yourself” and walked off.

Cage’s denial ended the possibility of the two men teaming up again, at least in the near future. This upset many fans who had hoped for a reunion of the legendary Edge and Christian tag team.
On a recent episode of Busted Open Radio, WWE Hall of Famer Bully Ray (aka Bubba Ray Dudley of The Dudley Boyz) spoke on why Christian Cage had to reject Adam Copeland on Dynamite and why it was the best choice. Bully Ray stated:
“Christian never got the same chance that Edge got in the WWE. Christian is now being allowed to be the version of Christian that Christian always wanted to be. And I can tell you first-hand, in the nicest of ways, that Christian is an egotistical p***k, who truly thinks he’s better than everybody else, and always was the bigger heel in the team. And now you’re just seeing it play out, and it’s going to play out better with Adam more than anybody else.”

The two men are forever tied together. They rose up the ranks in WWE together, but Adam Copeland always overshadowed Cage. It was hard for Cage to make a name for himself without being compared to his former tag team partner.
However, in AEW he has shown the world yet again what he can do and that he is just as capable as Copeland ever was. The two men entering a feud together, which it looks like will be coming soon, and it not being a foregone conclusion that Copeland will win is exciting. Even though Copeland and Cage are not on the same page currently, it may not always be that way.

Matt Hardy Says They Will Rekindle Their Feud Eventually
Matt Hardy discussed on his podcast, The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy, that he thinks Adam Copeland and Christian Cage will eventually reunite and they will reignite their rivalry with the Hardy Boyz. However, he doesn’t think that will happen anytime soon because Copeland and Cage still have a lot left they can do on their own.
He went on to talk about the match they will have, even if it isn’t a recreation of a ladder match from 1999. Matt Hardy explained:
“We’re not going to do the 1999 No Mercy ladder match whenever we do have this match. I think we can still have a great match. We can still go out. We can have a killer match. It can be super entertaining and it’s going to be fun,. I think we can still do it on a level high enough.”

Two of the greatest tag teams of the 2000s are both in AEW. That is really exciting and to think that they are both competing at a high level just adds even more to it.
