GARGOYLES: ATOMIC MONSTER TO BRING NEW LIFE TO THE DISNEY EPIC AFTER 29 YEARS

After 29 years The Gargoyles are ready to rise again!
Disney's Gargoyles

The year was 1994, one day haunting excitement flooded nations as children met Disney’s Gargoyles for the first time. Since that fateful day, children rushed home after school to spend time with the Gargoyles. Those children have all grown up, we were them.

The year is 2023, today a new excitement floods the internet as we unpack the news of a live-action Gargoyles series in development.

GARGOYLES RISE ONCE MORE!

From the deep crevices of Disney’s magnificent past, Gargoyles is being brought back to life by two creators of films that make us terrified to sleep at night, James Wan and Gary Dauberman.

Gary Dauberman will be doing most of the heavy lifting as the writer, executive producer, and showrunner for the series with Atomic Monster, James Wan’s studio, executive producing.

Gargoyles was developed by Walt Disney Television Animation and ran for three seasons, between 1994 and 1997. The epic series was about creepy gargoyle statues moved from a castle in Scotland to modern-day New York. Once the statutes arrive in the city that never sleeps, they awaken from a thousand-year-old spell and take on the responsibility of protecting the city, becoming, as the show’s narration chillingly said, “stone by day, warriors by night.”

GARGOYLES HAD THE WINNING FORMULA

Gargoyles Awakening

The series came at a revolutionary time in animation when storytellers took risks while remaining within the perimeters of what was appropriate to be seen by young viewers. Gargoyles like Batman The Animated Series and X-Men, benefited from those risks, appealing not only to a young demographic but to an older demographic as well. The success of those shows can attributed to their deep storylines, round character development, and mature tones as well as subject matter.

Disney is in a domineering phase of making live-action remakes of their animated hits, though that’s been more on their theatrical side and results have been mostly varying from tolerable to terrible. As exciting as it can be to know that there is a live-action Gargoyles series around the corner, it’s perfectly reasonable to be cautiously optimistic.

A HORROR ICON IN THE MAKING

Atomic Monster

Dauberman is known for writing Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation, and Annabelle Comes Homes, which were all under Atomic Monster and part of James Wan’s shared universe for The Conjuring franchise, the highest-grossing horror franchise thus far. He also wrote the latest Conjuring entry The Nun. All of those movies boasted massive financial success at the box office. Eventually, Dauberman climbed up the ranks making his directorial debut Annabelle Comes Home.

Dauberman and Wan also worked on DC’s shortlived Swamp-Thing series for DC’s seemingly shorter-lived streaming platform “DC Universe”. Outside of The Conjuring Universe and The DC Universe Dauberman continued making his mark on the horror world while writing the two-part adaptation of Stephen King’s It. Chapter One made cinematic history as the highest-grossing horror film of all time. He also has King’s adaptation of Salem’s Lot, which he wrote and directed for Warner Bros. under his belt

Atomic Monster was one of the studios responsible for the birth and triumph of M3GAN. The rising film company is currently working on a series adaptation of the Einer-winning comic The Good Asian as well as a feature adaptation of the horror video game Dead by Daylight.
