The setting is awash with technological marvels: holographic phones, AI omnipresence, and the dazzling concept of a digital afterlife that tantalizingly dances on the border between eternal paradise and exquisite torment.

In the hands of Emmy-winning writer Greg Daniels, Upload‘s techno-utopia—or dystopia, depending on one’s perspective—is not merely a backdrop, but a character in itself, breathing life into the narrative with its omnipresent influence on the lives and afterlives of the characters. Every corner of this universe is filled with delightful, albeit occasionally disconcerting, novelties that not only captivate the imagination but also echo with ominous prescience, reflecting our own world’s rapid technological advancements and the ethical quandaries they usher in.
The Best Avatars
The cast of Upload delivers performances that shimmer with human vulnerability, charm, and nuanced complexity. Robbie Amell’s portrayal is a tapestry of conflicted emotions, breathing life into characters marred by questionable past choices yet irresistibly endearing. His performance not only does justice to both Nathan’s but enhances the narrative with a heartwarming genuineness. Also, I will die on this hill, his physical comedy is thoroughly underrated.
Andy Allo embodies Nora with a delightful range that captures the essence of her character’s struggles and passions, offering viewers a touch of relatable humanity amidst the digital spectacles. The character of Ingrid, wrought to life by Allegra Edwards, blooms spectacularly this season. Edwards navigates the labyrinth of Ingrid’s complexities with a mastery that showcases an impressive evolution of character, making every moment she graces the screen a captivating experience.

Zainab Johnson, Kevin Bigley, and Owen Daniels also deliver terrific performances. Johnson’s Aleesha is easily the most normal character, which in this world is undoubtedly a tremendous task. Aleesha is the grounding of everything. A person just trying to build their life, empathetic to the issues, but realistically very limited to actually contribute. Aleesha has her life to worry about before she can save the world, but there is never a doubt she would be saving it if she didn’t have 50 million other things to worry about.
Bigley’s Luke is the devoted unembarassed openly loving best friend we all want, but also don’t want to deal with. Bigley wears Luke’s love of his friends on his sleeve and it is hilarious and heartwarmingly endearing. It is the level of love we all want at the attention and clinginess level we would hate, but we definitely understand.
Lastly, Owen Daniels is living proof brilliance and comedy are in his family’s DNA. Probably the unsung hero of this entire series, Daniels’s ever-upgrading AI wonderfully bounces from overtly calling out the ridiculous to almost invisibly pressing a button that will make audiences cry laughing. Personally, I haven’t cared this much about a bot since Bicentennial Man.
I Need More Upload
In its third season, Upload proves itself as not merely a show, but a triumphant orchestration of creative ingenuity. It’s an exploration of a future that resonates with both whimsy and warning, an odyssey of technological marvels shadowed by ethical mysteries. With a cast that delivers performances vibrating with humanity and a narrative arc that delicately balances gravity with light-heartedness, it’s a splendid continuation of a tale that never ceases to surprise, delight, and provoke thought.
The societal reflections, couched in humor and imaginative storytelling, make the often daunting realities of our world a little more approachable, and the technological fantasies, or perhaps prophecies, it presents, are an entrancing spectacle of the potentials and pitfalls of human innovation.
For all these reasons and more, I give Upload Season 3 a 9/10.

Synopsis:
In Upload Season Three, we pick back up with Nora and freshly downloaded Nathan as they navigate their relationship, while racing to stop the mysterious conspiracy that threatens to destroy millions of lives. Can they shut down Freeyond, and finally have a real life together? Or is it just a matter of time until Nathan’s head explodes?
Meanwhile, in Lakeview, a backup copy of Nathan has been activated and Ingrid’s not about to let this second chance at love slip away. Back in the real world, Aleesha rises through the ranks of Horizen by managing AI education, and falls into a new romantic relationship. And Luke, all alone in Lakeview, is forced to come up with the funds to pay for his stay in paradise, driving him to work in The Grey Zone.
