Disney’s WIZARDS OF WAVERLY PLACE Set To Return In A New Series with Familiar Faces

The beloved Disney Channel Original series, 'Wizards of Waverly Place' is making its return with Selena Gomez and David Henrie making their return.

Wizards of Waverly Place is one of the many original Disney television series that became a pop culture phenomenon in the late 2000s. This was the series that made Selena Gomez, David Henrie, and many other actors into household names. According to an exclusive article from Deadline, Disney has ordered a pilot for the follow-up series that will be executive-produced by original stars Selena Gomez and David Henrie.

Deadline has reported Gomez will guest star in the pilot episode of the sequel series as her original character, Alex Russo while Henrie will be reprising his role as Justin Russo as a series regular. New cast members will be joining the series with Henrie, such as Janice LeAnn Brown from Disney’s Just Roll With It, Alkaio Thiele (Call Me Kat), and Mimi Gianopulos (American Princess).

Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas, who are known to be behind the Disney Channel comedy Spinoff, Raven’s Home, will be in charge of the Waverly Place revival pilot episode. The series will pick up after an incident that occurs at WizTech where Justin Russo leaves his wizard powers behind, opting for a normal human life with his wife and two sons. A young powerful wizard in need of training shows up at his door which leads Justin to embrace his past to ensure the future of the Wizard World.

The young wizard, who will be the series lead, is named Billie and will be portrayed by Brown. Thiele will play Roman Russo, Justin’s oldest son and Gianopulous will play Justin’s wife, Giada. Gary Marsh and Andy Fickman will also be executive producers for the series with Fickman directing.

Wizards of Waverly Place was created by Todd J. Greenwald and it ran on Disney Channel from 2007-2012. The series followed the Russo Family where three siblings navigated the challenges of adolescence while mastering their magical abilities. The cast included Maria Canals-Barrera, David DeLuise, Jake T. Austin, and Jennifer Stone. The series had high viewership in the United States, including products, such as soundtrack albums, merchandise, and video game adaptations.

Many praised Wizards of Waverly Place for its humor and cast, while the series won two additional Emmys for Outstanding Children’s Program in 2009 and 2012 as well as two Artios Awards from the Casting Society of America for Outstanding Achievement in Casting.

When it came to the series finale, it was one of the most-watched final episodes of any Disney Channel show. After the series’ conclusion, the cast returned for a stand-alone television special, The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex in 2013.
