Composer Jerskin Fendrix provides insight on his masterful score for the movie Poor Things.

Poor Things boasts not only the mesmerizing art we see but the mesmerizing art we hear. We got the pleasure of attending a press conference for the film where we discovered how the music was brought to life, as well as the role it played in the grand artistry of the motion picture.

Jerskin Fendrix discussed the dynamics of the Poor Things score and the process of his creation with the collaboration of the director, Yorgos Lanthimos, at the press conference.

“The early talks we had about the film mainly revolved around the idea that this world, Bella’s vision interpretation of everything had to have music that did not really sound like anything else. It seemed obvious to not really have any references. We didn’t discuss having any other composers, any other pieces of sheet music, film music or whatever.”

I must confess, I have not seen the movie yet, don’t judge me, I have not been to the cinema in a while. I attended the press conference, listened to the music, patiently waiting for the conference to begin, and found myself in a state not unlike a trance.

Though I have not seen the film, I know exactly what Fendrix was talking about because I felt immersed in a plethora of thoughts and feelings belonging to someone else on account of the possession the music had over me.

No words were spoken, yet I was able to hear wonder, joy, and even a little bit of fear as the melodies progressed. If Fendrix did not succeed in his objective, I do not know what he could have done any differently.

Music echoes what’s in our souls in the same way movies reflect them. Jerskin Fendrix understood that all too well to deliver a rendition that’s equally wonderful and weird, and that’s what makes it beautiful.
