Lara Croft will soon be back doing what she does best. Prime Video has officially announced the series order for a new live-action Tomb Raider television series. The new show is in the works with award-winner Phoebe Waller-Bridge on tap as the writer and executive producer for the upcoming series.
This is part of a plan for Amazon MGM Studios, Crystal Dynamics, and dj2 Entertainment to expand the Tomb Raider universe through series and films.
PRIME VIDEO ORDERS NEW TOMB RAIDER SHOW TO SERIES
Waller-Bridge (IF, Fleabag, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny) will write and executive produce the new show, which is based on the iconic video game franchise of the same name. The games follow the world-famous archaeologist and adventurer Lara Croft.
The new series is part of a deal between Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios, originating through dj2’s first-look deal with the studio. The plan is to develop additional Tomb Raider stories into series and films. Per Prime Video, the new series will premiere exclusively on Prime Video later on in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
Additionally, Crystal Dynamics and Amazon Games are also partnered to collaborate on, develop, and publish a new multi-platform Tomb Raider game. The currently untitled game will be a single-player, narrative-driven action-adventure project. It’s described as the “all-new, next chapter to Lara Croft’s legendary explorations” in the franchise.
Speaking on the announcement via a press release, Waller-Bridge stated, “If I could tell my teenage self this was happening I think she’d explode. Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators. Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure. Bats ‘n all.”
Amazon MGM Studios Head Jennifer Salke added, “I’m so happy to announce that we have ordered the epic, globetrotting series Tomb Raider from the incredibly gifted Emmy-award winner Phoebe Waller-Bridge and the team at Crystal Dynamics.” She continued, “Fans and newcomers can look forward to exhilarating adventures that honor the legacy of this iconic character.”
Crystal Dynamics Studio Head Scott Amos also chimed in on the news:
“Amazon MGM Studios and Amazon Games are incredible collaborators with a massive reach across the globe enabling us to expand our Tomb Raider franchise with multiple new adventures and a shared passion for creating impactful, entertaining, emotional experiences for players and viewers throughout every facet of this universe. These timeless stories span all media platforms to meet audiences where they want to engage with Tomb Raider; it’s a critical step towards our future with fans everywhere.”
– Scot Amos, Head of Studio at Crystal Dynamics
The new series is being executive produced by Waller-Bridge, Crystal Dynamics, and Jenny Robbins through Wells Street Productions, Dmitri M. Johnson through dj2 Entertainment, Michael Scheel, and Legendary Television. Amanda Greenblatt and Ryan Andolina are consulting producers under their Star Party banner. The series is being produced by Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios.

It should be interesting to see who lands the coveted role of Lara Croft. In live-action, the role has previously been portrayed by Oscar-winner Angelina Jolie in two live-action films. Alicia Vikander later portrayed the character in the 2018 Tomb Raider film. Meanwhile, Hayley Atwell (MCU, Agent Carter, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning) voices the character in Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, which is expected to debut on Netflix later this year.
The new Tomb Raider show does not yet have an official release date. It will debut exclusively on Prime Video at a later date.
