James Gunn explains the omission of Star-Lord’s elemental blaster in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.
The MCU has done a great job of adapting Marvel Comics characters and implementing them into major blockbuster stories on the big screen. Even when some of those heroes come from absolutely wild and outlandish comic stories. The franchise has even found a way to integrate all of these different sagas into a palpable version of the real world, save for some shrinking tech, magic, and aliens.
Even while Marvel Studios does their absolute best to bring the most important aspect of each of their leading characters into the films, there are some details that get left on the cutting room floor. Or in this case, the pages of the comic books. Just the other day, one of the biggest names behind the scenes of the MCU, James Gunn, opened up on a part of one of his lead character’s arcs for which this was the case.
James Gunn on Star-Lord’s Elemental Gun
Via his personal Twitter account, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn answered a fan question that asked why Peter Quill’s classic elemental blaster weapon from the comics hasn’t been utilized in the movies to this point. Gunn explained that it would be simply too much science-fiction mumbo-jumbo to cram into a two-hour movie for the audience. The full tweet can be seen here:
The elemental gun is Star Lord’s primary choice of weapon through the course of most of his comic appearances. It’s an immensely powerful weapon which usually includes two separate firing barrels and triggers for two separate fingers on one hand, and it can be used to summon the four major elements of Earth/wind, fire, water and lightning.

Even for as awesome of a weapon as this appears to be, along with how useful it would be, it doesn’t seem to be quite the kind of tool the version of Peter Quill in the MCU would either choose to use or happen to come upon. Quill in the movies has made his living mostly around being a thief and a scavenger, wielding a pair of energy blasters as he makes his journeys through the galaxy. His modest background and upbringing after being taken by Yondu and the Ravagers doesn’t exactly seem to lend itself to him wielding a weapon as sophisticated, or even as powerful, as the elemental blaster yet.
This isn’t to say he will never wield the elemental blaster, only that he hasn’t to this point in the MCU. While James Gunn’s third film in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy is seemingly set to take the team on a whirlwind adventure after leaving Earth, there could very well be a possibility that this new blaster could come into play against whoever their next major foe is.
Production for Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 is set to begin sometime in early-to-mid-2021, and there is no officially set time-frame for the film’s release in theaters.
