According to her recent interview with Fandango:

“I would say there’s so many things that we’re going to be able to explore, but what we always have to do before we decide who the villain is going to be and what Spidey goes up against is what is the story we’re telling about? You know? What’s the Peter Parker story we’re telling? What’s the Miles Morales story that we’re telling? But we always have to start with that. The good thing about these movies is as big as the canvas they take place on can be, they are always just stories about a kid.”

MILES MORALES SWINGS IN

In case you don’t know who Amy Pascal is, she’s an executive at Sony Pictures, the company that co-owns the rights to Spider-Man with Marvel Studios and has seen the character through all his cinematic incarnations.  She was also a huge part of making possible the game-changing, multi-Spidey-franchise crossover that is and will be Spider-Man: No Way Home.  Again speaking with Fandango, Pascal assured that Tom Holland’s time in the Spidey Suit as well as Sony’s collaborations with Marvel would not end with the threequel:

“This is not the last movie that we are going to make with Marvel – [this is not] the last Spider-Man movie,” Pascal revealed. “We are getting ready to make the next Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland and Marvel. We’re thinking of this as three films, and now we’re going to go onto the next three. This is not the last of our MCU movies.”

Wowsa.  The prospect of 3 more films starring Tom Holland as Spider-Man should send fans grinning from ear to ear.  Of course, the ending of Venom: Let There Be Carnage connected its universe with that of the MCU, and the trailers for Morbius feature images and allusions to previous Spidey films as well as an appearance by Michael Keaton’s Vulture who first appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

They’ve also announced plans for a film based around Kraven The Hunter, a potential 3rd Venom movie, and a litany of other Spider-Man villains, if successful, could have their own sequels and keep the Super ball rolling. Seems like it’s about time to introduce Miles Morales, no?

Of course, it will all depend on how long Tom Holland desires to wear the suit.  He recently revealed he’d like to be done playing the character by the time he’s 30, so at the current age of 25, they’d have to get these films out toot sweet.  Even if Sony’s future Spider-Man films don’t feature Holland prominently, it would be a perfect opportunity to bring in Miles Morales to duke it out with his own foes and/or re-tool some of Peter Parker’s to fit Miles’ story.

There’s an endless web of possibilities here., but we’ll have to see how Spider-Man: No Way Home and Morbius (which sinks its teeth into theater screens January 28th of next year) leave the door open for Miles.

Spider-Man: No Way Home looks to be the biggest live-action outing ever for the character, tying together the films and stories of both Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy and Marc Webb’s Amazing Spider-Man duology.  The former ran from 2002-2007 and was a smash hit that, along with the burgeoning X-Men and Blade franchises, made superhero movies accessible and popular with audience members beyond the comic book crowd.

The latter rebooted the character to a somewhat mixed reception starring Oscar-winner Andrew Garfield in the part and has slowly grown a cult following since the series’ cancellation in 2014 after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 financially underperformed.  Fans of Miles Morales can see him in the Oscar-winning animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse and its upcoming sequel, and we’ll get to see Tom Holland square off against many of Maguire and Garfield’s foes in the multiversal Spider-Man: No Way Home when it swings into theaters December 17, 2021.  Once again, it’s a great time to be a Spider-Man fan.
