John Cena will be making his return to Smackdown Live on February 28th, 2020.

Cena’s return appearance was first announced on WWE Backstage and confirmed on both, WWE and Cena’s Twitter accounts. Wrestling fans haven’t seen the superstar since the July 22nd episode of Raw. Over the past few years he has only been seen around the wrestling ring at random shows and Pay-Per-View events. The last time Cena wrestled, even on a part-time schedule, was in 2018.

John Cena Is Kinda A Big Deal

It’s a big deal to have Cena come back to Smackdown Live for two reasons. The first is that Cena is one of the most recognizable celebrities alive today, wrestling or otherwise. His announced appearance can help boost ratings and possibly bring in young fans who may only know him from his movie appearances.

The second reason it’s a big deal is because Smackdown is where he made his WWE wrestling debut. Almost 18 years ago, Cena walked out and confronted Kurt Angle which ignited his career. Since then, Cena has become a 16-time world champion and a future WWE Hall of Famer. He’s the first WWE mega-babyface since Hulk Hogan.

John Cena the Movie Star and Prankster

As Cena’s wrestling career started to wind down and come closer to an end, he began to focus more on his acting career. Cena has starred in Blockers, Bumblebee, as well as the host of the game show, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?

On Cena’s Twitter account, while promoting his next Smackdown Live appearance, he tweeted the poster of The Invisible Man movie hinting at his participation in the film. However, when fans checked Cena’s IMDB page to find out what his role was in the movie. To everyone’s confusion, myself included, he’s not credited in the movie at all. It turned out to be a practical joke. Cena’s catchphrase is “you can’t see me,” making him an invisible man. Well played Cena, but darn you for making me do extra research.

Why Is Cena Coming To Smackdown Live?

It’s unclear why Cena is making a Smackdown Live appearance. He may be making an announcement for a future WrestleMania match. That particular Smackdown takes place the day after WWE Super Showdown. My guess is that a lot of wrestlers are going to the event, because there’s a lot of money to be made in that venue. However, that leaves very few wrestlers stateside, so Cena will be there to fill a spot.

I’m almost certain Cena will wrestle that night. Is this the return of Cena to wrestling semi-regularly? I don’t believe that will be the case. Although he will most likely continue to make sporadic, non-contact appearances in WWE events. In any case, it’s looking like February 28th could be the last time we see Cena wrestle and that is a very sad thought.
