Jim Carrey is in discussions to join Seuss, as the world’s most famous children’s author himself in an upcoming biopic.
Jim Carrey has numerous memorable roles in his filmography. However, one that seems to continue to grow in popularity is his turn as The Grinch in Ron Howard’s live-action adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The tale has also been immortalized as an animated Christmas special, but younger generations have increasingly looked to the live-action film during the holiday season.
Carrey made his mark in the industry as a rubber-faced comedian, however he has proved numerous times – in films like Man on the Moon, The Truman Show, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind – that he should be taken seriously as a dramatic force as well. The multiple Golden Globe winner was even nominated for his performance as the Grinch, which is an accomplishment all to itself.
Well, it seems that Carrey has shown interest in digging even deeper into that source material. Our sources have indicated to us that as of late December, Jim Carrey was in discussions with Entertainment One and Rain Dog Films to star as Ted “Dr. Seuss” Geisel in the biopic, Seuss. Carla Hacken is attached as the producer, though there currently isn’t a director attached. Eyal Podell and Jonathan Stewart scripted the drama, which has been hailed as one of Hollywood’s top unproduced scripts for years now.
Jim Carrey, What’s Up Doc?
The film looks to be far from the flight of fancy found in Geisel’s children’s book. instead, the movie will track the world-renowned author from age 8 until his 50’s. Geisel experienced a handful of tragedies at the same time that his book career took off. His wife, Helen, suffered from a debilitating disease and made choices that dramatically altered the course of Geisel’s life. Which ultimately led to his first big hit, “The Cat in the Hat.” There definitely is room for an actor of Carrey’s range to play and could lead to truly dramatic moments only meant for big screen.
Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, was both a writer and artist who has sold over 600 million books and counting. His works are designed to stretch the boundaries of children’s literature with a combination of witty wordplay, along with unforgettable art. He’s the author of “Green Eggs and Ham,” “Horton Hears a Who,” “Hop on Pop,” and countless other classics. Many of his works were adapted into TV specials that have been running annually since the 60’s, while there are also many modern day blockbuster adaptations of his works in the cinema as well.
This seems like an amazing fit for Carrey, if he signs on the line. This project is lacking a director, so perhaps a lot hinges on who they are ultimately able to attract. But regardless, Carrey would crush this role, and who wouldn’t want to see him back up on the big stage cracking jokes and accepting awards? We will be sure to keep a close eye on this one…
