When fans heard news of the upcoming sequel to the 1996 hit Space Jam, it’s clear that nobody knew exactly what to expect. Even with the fanfare and love that still exists for the original movie (much of it from yours truly), it’s still a movie about Michael Jordan teaming up with the Looney Tunes to save the world, via a game of basketball…against aliens.

The first movie had left-field casting choices and the sequel seemingly will follow the trend it established. Last summer we got the news of Space Jam 2 casting Don Cheadle in an undisclosed role. The initial theory across many fanbases pointed to him simply playing himself, similar to Bill Murray’s role in the original Space Jam. However, Cheadle shut down those rumors and said he could not reveal who he was playing.

After fans across the globe pondered about who he could possibly be playing in the movie, news has broken which may clarify his role. During a recent interview on the Clip City podcast, Paul Scheer, who has been working with Cheadle on the second season of Black Monday, dropped an interesting nugget of information on who Cheadle would play in Space Jam 2.

Actually Don Cheadle, who I do Black Monday with, he’s the bad guy in Space Jam [2], and he said LeBron’s really great. He was great in Trainwreck too.

Don Cheadle’s Villain: Animated or Not?

This would be quite the bombshell if it comes to fruition, although now it opens up more possibilities on Cheadle’s real character. Will he play a live-action antagonist? Will he voice an animated villain similar to Danny Devito’s Mr. Swackhammer from the original Space Jam? Either way, this would be an intriguing new direction for the star actor after his last few years of work.

While Cheadle has made a name for himself in critically acclaimed films like Crash, Hotel Rwanda, and Miles Ahead, he has become an international star thanks to his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Colonel James Rhodes, aka War Machine. His most recent appearance came in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which became the highest-grossing movie of all time and helped conclude Marvel Studios’ Infinity Saga
