On April 7, 2020, James Gunn participated in a Guardians Of The Galaxy virtual watch party. As an added bonus, he supplied fans with a fascinating tidbit about Star-Lord’s time on earth offscreen in Avengers: Endgame.

According to the director and writer:

“Peter despised being back on earth and got off that planet as fast as he freaking could. He associates it completely with his mother dying.”

Mommy Issues, Star-Lord Style

The death of Peter Quill’s mother is easily one of the most tragic events in the entire Infinity Saga. The first film opened with her final moments before succumbing to brain cancer. In Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2, her death is made all the more tragic when Ego, The Living Planet, Star-Lord’s father reveals that he was the progenitor of Meredith Quill’s cancer.

Her death molded Peter into the man who would become Star-Lord and has continued to impact his journey throughout the MCU, affecting his decisions even in Endgame, as confirmed by Gunn. It’s not shocking that he would flee from a world that inadvertently forced him to confront the trauma and pain of her loss.

Meredith Quill is one of the MCU’s greatest unsung heroes, especially considering that the beloved Awesome Mix Vol.1 & 2 were her creations. Her connection to Peter also proved vital in the battle against Ego, for Star-Lord may have never regained his humanity or escaped from Ego if he didn’t love his mother so deeply.

His decision to flee Earth as quickly as possible also ensures that his knowledge of the planet will continue to be deeply outdated. Star-Lord’s affinity for the seventies and eighties remained unaltered by extended contact with the present day earth, and I would argue that is a blessing for fans.

While Star-Lord is sure to play a big role in the future of the MCU, we can now safely assume that his adventures with the Guardians will take place where they began – in the stars, far away from the Terrans and with his mother’s memory near and dear to his heart.
